President Truman plans to meet Democratic Chairman Frank McKinney amid the House tax investigation and calls for a dramatic cleanup. McKinney defends a $68,000 gain from a $1,000 stock investment, with Fulbright urging full public airing of the deal for the party’s good.
No. 1 Feldman complete as Ellenburger producer in Central East Scurry County with 373 barrels of oil per day from a 24 hour test and 200000 cubic feet per day gas. No. 2 Feldman planned one quarter mile east with rig move to begin immediately.
Frank E. McKinney, Democratic National Chairman, made a quick 68 000 profit on Empire Tractor Corp stock. He says he knew Frank Cohen only slightly when Cohen sold him 26 000 worth of stock in 1947 and repurchased it ten months later for 34 000. Cohen was criticized by President Truman in 1941 at a Senate War Investigating Committee hearing.
Visiting airmen from across the state praise Winston Field after the first landing today for the dedication ceremony. Major Gen. Sam Anderson of the Eighth Air Force was to speak, with 16 out of state planes joining a Pioneer DC-3 for free rides and a Reese AFB band concert.
Junior Chamber of Commerce members heard Hugh Rogers report on the poll tax campaign with posters countywide and a courthouse square trailer planned to collect payments. Bob Stevens of Wallace Brothers Circus announced a three ring show with elephants and lions to be sponsored here next April 1, pending license and ground.
Odessa and Ector County may form an independent health unit separate from the State Health Department after disputes with Dr. George W. Cox. Mayor C. W. McCollum called the potential secession a continuation of local independence, citing past self reliance in water, hospital, and airport projects. He criticized state officials for alleged inaction in the community’s sanitation efforts amid a polio spike and toilet survey results.
The Texas Railroad Commission ordered a three day shut in to test reservoir pressures in the Cogdell Kelley Snyder and Diamond M Canyon fields spanning Scurry and Kent Counties starting January 1. Earlier readings showed sharp pressure drops and reduced oil allowances. Pressure maintenance work has begun in the Diamond M field.
Senator John L. McClellan says he will not back the Democratic platform if it includes socialistic measures, claiming strong authority that Truman administration ideas will be in the 1949 platform. The Arkansas Democrat warns he will oppose such planks in next year’s party agenda.
In Tehran on December 11, opposition deputies moved to topple Premier Mohammed Mossadegh as a Nationalist mob battered Parliament gates. Inside, scuffles injured several, the session opened after a brief disturbance. The premier accused opponents of steering Iran toward terror and ruin as he planned to address Western oil dealings.
The commissioners court authorized extra help in the tax collector department to man a booth on the square for poll tax receipts. Assessor-collector Jim Ikard will hire staff once the Junior Chamber of Commerce sets up its square booth. The chamber seeks 6,000 poll tax and exemption certificates in Scurry County next year. The new law allows acting agents to collect poll taxes directly, aiding the chamber’s effort.
Rebecca Doswell age 52 was indicted in Dallas for the fatal shooting of her husband oilman Thomas W Doswell last August. She had been free on 25000 bond after initial murder charges. Doswell operated oil properties in Scurry County.

Scurry County commissioners voted to issue up to 525000 in warrants to fund a new jail and county road projects. County Judge DW Taylor explained warrants borrow money without taxpayer approval and may later be converted to bonds if uncontested, with potential savings on interest.
In Munsan Korea on December 12 talks stalled over prisoner exchange terms after a tentative offer for troop rotation and a two‑step Allied demand was withdrawn. UN spokesman Lt Col Levie cited 100000 North Koreans and 15000 to 20000 Chinese among captives, with 70000 to 85000 South Korean and 12000 to 14000 UN prisoners.
The Weather Bureau predicts fair skies and rising temperatures across Texas in the coming days as a large high pressure area moves in from the west. Sub-freezing readings were reported across much of the state, with lows down to 17 at Lubbock and 19 in Amarillo, while rainfall remains minimal and light showers were noted but no rain expected today or Wednesday.
Local records show 1.617 citizens paid poll taxes toward a 6,000 target with exemptions granted. Officials note progress remains under final tally as filings continue.

Internal Revenue Commissioner John B. Dunlap reported a sharp rise in tax fraud cases sent to the Justice Department for prosecution in July through September, up two and a half times from a year earlier, as a House subcommittee began its tax scandal investigation.
The court voted to issue up to 250 000 in warrants to purchase a lot and construct a new county jail separate from the courthouse. Plans call for a two story jail with living quarters, offices, a mugging room, a dark room, and segregated cells. The commission will consider other properties before final purchase and estimates the project under 250 000.
