Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy did not appear at a Cincinnati speaking engagement as his wife explained the elbow infection has not cleared up. Reports of grave illness were denied by Mrs. McCarthy and the couple’s secretary clarified the message.
In Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County a special election ended beer sales with 2,660 dry to 2,621 wet votes. The county had allowed beer since 1946. If canvass confirms the result, sale becomes illegal January 8, thirty days after the canvass.
Former Foreign Service officer John Paton Davies Jr. says he will not pick up about 17000 owed him until he can clarify the meaning of a government form required for leaving employment. Davies, fired by Secretary Dulles on Nov. 5 for alleged lack of judgment, says the form could bar him from public comments on national defense or related matters without prior authorization.
The United States urged prompt U N action to secure the release of 11 American fliers and other UN prisoners held by Red China, calling it a clear violation of the Korean armistice. The U N Steering Committee planned a quick debate at the 60 nation Assembly.
The Scurry County United Fund plans a luncheon meeting of division chairmen to close its first annual fund drive, with more than 26 000 raised toward a 29 500 budget. Agencies participating include the Salvation Army Red Cross Boy Scouts Girl Scouts Scurry County Youth Center West Texas Boys Ranch American Heart Association and United Service Organizations.
Adlai E. Stevenson told a Loyola University dinner that Democrats would act as the loyal opposition in Congress, supporting the Eisenhower administration where possible while opposing policies seen as harmful. He urged unity within the GOP and stressed restoring responsibility in public discourse and domestic policy.
Vatican reports a new course of treatment brought better rest for Pope Pius XII, 78, who collapsed last Thursday. Doctors said the rally would continue if feeding can be managed, as an alkaline stomach wash occurred this afternoon and the pontiff prepared to bless the crowds in St Peter's Square tomorrow.
The United Nations General Assembly, by unanimous vote, backed President Eisenhower’s atoms for peace program. Russia and the United States again joined in voting, opposing only a proposed link to the Security Council. The assembly urged rapid setup of an international atomic energy agency and called for a pre-August international technical conference to study atomic power and related fields.
A severe dust storm swept the Panhandle and West Texas, lowering visibility to near zero in Childress and Dalhart and to three quarters of a mile in Lubbock. Winds peaked around 35 mph, planes were grounded at Borger's City airport, and forecasters predicted the dust would dissipate by morning leaving a hazy North Texas sky. It was a hot December day with no rain reported.
Cairo December four six leaders of the Moslem Brotherhood underground were sentenced to be hanged for plotting to kill Prime Minister Gamal Abdel Nasser and topple the military government. The Brotherhood was ordered destroyed and a high official was spared by commutation late tonight after a special military court verdict.

Paul M. Butler of Indiana won the DNC chairmanship on the first roll call, defeating Michael DiSalle and others, in a contested election that reflected Stevenson Mitchell faction support. He pledged unity and predicted a glorious victory while acknowledging party differences. Butler noted broad national support and said his open-ballot election marked political history.
Six persons died in a head on crash two miles south of Robstown on a clear day. Two airmen from Kingsville Naval Auxiliary Air Station were killed. others include Kingsville and Robstown residents in a 1949 sedan. Injured were two airmen and two civilians.
A third floor fire in a crowded East Side Cleveland tenement killed five children all first cousins. The victims Janice Johnson 6 Frank 5 Estella 2 Vicki 2 were in the home of Ruth Johnson and James Duvall. Mayor Celebrezze ordered a full report tighter inspections and faster slum clearance. An arson probe cited defective wiring and the owner Laura Gillum allegedly operated without a city license.
Rep. Sam Rayburn of Texas incoming Democratic speaker rejected a quote saying he doubted President Eisenhower knew his job. He said he never made such a remark about Eisenhower or any president and criticized the misquotation as terrible. Republican leaders called the attribution shabby if true.
