East German workers widened the Berlin Wall barriers at seven crossing points while U S troops in the American sector display force at Friedrichstrasse. U S command hurried in 30 infantrymen and armor behind sandbags as East Germans strengthened the wall with concrete seven feet high and five feet thick.
The Dominican Republic faces a political crisis as government and opposition hold renewed talks on a unity government. Civic Union head Viriato Fiallo demands President Balaguer step down, while a seven day general strike presses demands. Reports say Balaguer may have had hepatitis though officials say he is at the palace. Thirteen air force officers seek to remove the armed forces chief and say the military must exit politics. the officer corps resignations are accepted.
North Central Texas will see mostly cloudy skies today with showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight and cooler by Tuesday. Northeast and Southeast Texas expect showers or tstorms today into tonight with cooler conditions Tuesday. Panhandle and High Plains turn colder. Northwest Texas warms then clears. South Central and Southwest Texas forecast widely scattered showers with highs around 70s to 80s and cooler nights.
The 1960 independent audit by Deffebach and Yorgesen was submitted to the Commissioners Court and approved. Tax receipts totaled 1 995 295 43 and disbursements 1 977 794 94 with 17 005 14 interest from short term investments. Court announced courthouse holidays December 23 to 26 and January 1. Western powers and the Soviet Bloc reach a six point deal at the Laos peace conference in Geneva. Britain and the Soviet Union named joint guardians of Laotian neutrality with veto power over major decisions by the three nation control commission.
Industrialist Bernard Goldfine, 71, and his secretary Mildred Paperman, 43, are set to return to federal court to face probation violation charges. Goldfine is serving a year in Danbury for evading 790000 dollars in income taxes, and Paperman received a three year probation after pleading guilty to tax evasion of 304784 dollars tied to Strathmore Woolen Co. Goldfine also carries a five year probation on a suspended 18 month sentence in a second indictment. One probation condition required identifying recipients of about 600000 dollars unaccounted for in his business operations.
The Associated Press reports a warm spell across Texas with muggy, spring like conditions. Fog hung around Beaumont and Corpus Christi with light rain in Central Texas and clear skies elsewhere along the coast. Readings ranged 45 to 69 promising scattered showers and continued cloudiness through eastern Texas with above normal temperatures expected to persist.
United States and Israel face a looming clash with Arab states over the 1948 refugee question. The U N relief agency report cites a 13 year old decision allowing refugees to return home or receive compensation. Diplomatic efforts center on expanding conciliation commission membership and negotiating all issues including refugee property income.
A Lufthansa four jet Boeing 720B crashed on a training flight near Ebersheim west of Mainz. All three crew members died, two captains and a flight engineer, all Germans. No passengers were aboard. The crash happened just after noon as the plane attempted an emergency landing. cause undetermined.
The first in a series of division kickoffs for the Scurry County United Fund occurred this afternoon with the public employee division led by Roy Dunlap meeting at city hall at 3 30 p m. The special gifts division led by Bob Crowell begins Tuesday at 7 a m at the Village. A noon report session at the Village is set for tomorrow as the fund moves toward its 1962 budget of 38000 to support eight agencies.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear a case from New Hyde Park parents claiming daily school prayers violate the First Amendment's separation of church and state. The state Regents had urged local boards to use the prayer, drawing support from some faiths and opposition from others.
