The record recalls 1917 Woodrow Wilson asking Congress for a declaration of war on Austria Hungary. It notes 1818 Illinois admission as 21st state and 1828 Andrew Jackson’s victory over John Quincy Adams. American B52s dropped 150000 pounds of bombs on suspected North Vietnamese positions near Con Thien and Gio Linh after clashes with Marines. The Leary destroyed several mortars while Marines reported 15 killed and 51 wounded. In Dak To area, one American died and 10 were wounded in a three hour barrage.
Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower made a hurried stop in Amarillo Texas to view the Chisholm Trail Centennial Museum on his way to Palm Desert California aboard the San Francisco Chief. A fire in San Antonio caused over 100000 dollars in damage to the Western Union Vehicle Storage Building and an electrical supply house. More than 60 firefighters and 15 pieces of equipment battled the blaze overnight.

AP reports U S Steel Corp raised prices by five dollars a ton on two steel sheet grades, with other producers studying the move. Price boosts on sheets could quickly lift costs for consumer goods and autos, while GM and Ford wait to assess auto price implications amid new U S regulations and stronger U A W contracts.
