Snyder men to attend Austin hearing on Big Spring highway widening

Several Snyder residents head to Austin to address the State Highway Commission about widening the Big Spring highway to four lanes. County Judge Edgar Taylor reports to the Chamber of Commerce as local groups agree to share right of way costs and curb work.

Ike Invites Adlai To NATO Meeting

Adlai E. Stevenson said President Eisenhower wants him at the NATO summit in Paris on December 16. Stevenson, who may decide in 7 to 10 days, noted the meeting followed his White House briefing with congressional leaders on 15 nation parley proposals and possible changes to broaden the President’s nuclear information authority. He stressed he acts as a consultant to Secretary Dulles and will submit views in a memorandum. The invitation was informal, with the President expressing happiness at Stevenson’s attendance.

Union bus drivers and mechanics of Austin Transit Corp ended a wage dispute by voting to accept an 18 cent hourly raise. Drivers now earn $1.60 an hour and mechanics $1.67.

Funeral services for Clanton N. Pete Harbin 44 of 2200 Thirtieth Street set for 2 p.m. in Dublin. Harbin, night manager at McCormick's Super Service, died after a heart attack yesterday in Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Burial in Green Creek Cemetery. Snyder City Council Approves Three Zone Changes

Snyder city council approved three zoning changes with first reading of an ordinance. Two residential zones were reclassified to neighborhood business and one industrial site became a one family residential area. A separate reclassification moved part of Highlands Addition from single family to commercial use.

Hawley Plant To Be Closed In 30 Days

Cosden Petroleum Corp will shutter the Hawley refinery near Abilene within 30 days as federal purchases of aviation gasoline drop 50 percent from the Big Spring plant starting Jan 1. The Hawley operation will remain closed at least a year under standby conditions. about one third of Hawley’s 70 workers may find jobs at Big Spring.

Jaycees Challenged To Make Lives Count

Charles E. Shearer Jr of Indianapolis challenged Snyder Jaycees and visitors to make the 21 to 35 period count for their communities. Five Year Snyder Improvement Plan Outlined by City Manager

Roy Dunlap presented a five year plan to Snyder's city council detailing $730000 in capital improvements to support growth from 17500 to an estimated 21000 by 1962 and 26000 by 1970. The plan covers sewer, water, parks, a new city hall, a north Snyder fire station, storm sewer and paving costs with bond financing possible without increasing current taxes.

Cold Front Rolls Across State Today

A westward cold front crossed Texas Tuesday from near Texarkana to north of Waco, with little temperature drop. West Texas skies were clear, while Alice Kingsville and Corpus Christi saw fog. The Lower Rio Grande Valley suffered severe crop losses from a Sunday frost, ruining about 99 percent of tender vegetables, threatening peppers tomatoes squash beans peas and eggplant and risking next year's citrus growth.

Hurricane Nina battered Hawaii with heavy rains and winds reaching 92 mph before veering northwest about 200 miles away. The storm’s advance caused power outages and property damage as residents braced for further effects along the coast.

High Monday 66 degrees low 29 with 7 30 a m reading of 37. East and South Central Texas expect clearing and colder this afternoon and tonight. North Central Texas sees clearing and cooler tonight with 25 to 35 for lows. Snyder bands greet Santa at courthouse square

Snyder high school and junior high bands and the high school choir planned a 4 p.m. greeting for Santa who would arrive by helicopter for a 30 minute visit with local children marking the official start of Snyder’s Christmas season. A National Guard traffic corps under Capt. John Lynch aided officers during the event. A 33 year old Snyder man, who drove a car with a whip antenna and red light, conducted vehicle stops and searches, was questioned by Sheriff Earl Abercrombie and later pleaded guilty to disturbance and is jailed on a $40 bond.

Engineers at Cape Canaveral work to fix ground support cooling equipment and reduce second stage noise as the three stage Vanguard rocket nears launch.
