President Eisenhower announced that the Soviet Union conducted another atomic test. He said the latest blast was more powerful than the one a week earlier and followed his disclosure that Russia resumed nuclear testing last Sunday.
London reports Soviet Russia said it held nuclear weapon tests on August 24 and 30 to develop new types for troop formations. Moscow claimed tests occurred at high altitude to reduce radioactive fallout and used minimal radiological substance. President Eisenhower noted the Aug 30 test was more powerful than Aug 24, without detailing numbers. He criticized Soviet secrecy and said the latest tests do not alter U.S. defense plans.

Four persons were shot dead today in a gun fight at Nicosia General Hospital during an attempted escape by an EOKA Greek Cypriot extremist. One victim was a British police sergeant. The EOKA man had been brought to the hospital for treatment, while three other organization members aided his flight.
Rome reports Italian applications for pilot duty on the Suez Canal are being relayed to Cairo, according to an Egyptian embassy spokesman.
Senator Byrd reports U S government civilian payrolls rose to 10.526 billion in fiscal 1956, the highest on record, with total civilian employees around 2.398 million. He cites higher pay scales and growing employment, while noting a small year end dip in average employment. Gains in payrolls reflect increased staffing inside and outside the continental United States.
