In East Hartford, Frank DeCarlo, 34, held about 100 people at bay for 16 hours from a fortified apartment before killing his wife and son and fatally shooting himself. He declared, God hates me, life is terrible, it stinks, shortly before the suicide.
A psychiatrist report concludes David Berkowitz is not mentally capable to stand trial for the Son of Sam killings. The report says he lacks the capacity to understand court proceedings or aid his defense, per State Supreme Court Justice Gerald S. Held.
The AFL-CIO executive council is ready to approve a resolution of support for President Carter's Panama Canal treaty. If passed today, the labor group would become the first major national organization to endorse the proposal.
The SDN columnist recalls the 1972 Deep Creek flood as a new August storm hits Scurry County. Rain, lightning and power outages disrupted travel and TV viewing while staff note similarities to past events and weather warnings.
The Southern Governors conference committee unanimously urged Congress to phase out wellhead price controls on new natural gas. The group also backed a shift to world market prices with an excess profits tax, and urged faster U S Mexico and Alaska gas pipelines while criticizing the Carter energy plan. The July index of leading indicators fell 0.2 percent for the third straight month, matching May and June declines. Six indicators dropped while four rose, with weaknesses in average work week and orders offset by a surge in the money supply, prompting Federal Reserve rate actions.
The boll weevil control program expands county-wide in Scurry County after Carl Williams of the Producers Association confirms 102,000 pledged acres. A $6 per acre fee applies, spraying starts Sept. 6, with bee protection advised and daily schedules via the Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Larry H. Krull of the USDA says xylitol, a tooth friendly sugar substitute, could be derived from corn husks, straw and peanut hulls which contain 15 to 30 percent xylose. Finnish studies claim xylitol does not affect insulin and is as sweet as cane sugar, with potential market for diabetics and cavity control. Krull and George E. Inglett study crop residues to boost farm output and view agricultural residues as renewable income for farmers.
The Texas Division of Disaster Emergency Services monitors Tropical Storm Anita as it approaches the coast using the DPS statewide network. DPS spokesman Jim Robinson says no action is yet needed but staff are briefed on procedures and coordination with local governments for state and federal aid if necessary.
Students from kindergarten to college sign up for the 1977 78 term as Snyder High School, Snyder Elementary, and Western Texas College begin registrations. WTC starts classes tomorrow while public schools open next Tuesday after Labor Day. College students attend early. teachers head to the Texas State Teachers Association meeting on Oct 14.
A 2.6 percent staff reduction at the State Insurance Board brings annual savings near one million dollars. Board chairman Joe Christie announced that staff totals have fallen to 568, the smallest in years, with further reductions planned this year.
