Thousands of Marines and reservists train at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center near Pickle Meadows California. Lt Col George Knudson says the program builds overall Marine capability not a special unit, with year round courses ranging two to four weeks. Trainees climb cliffs rope bridge across rugged terrain and learn survival skills including snow camping and rope use. The center aims to handle about 10 000 trainees annually with a history dating to 1951 after Korean War setbacks.

Abilene gunman surrenders after long standoff ends
A gunman who held police at bay for over 12 hours in Abilene surrendered before 7:30 a.m. Shortly after the standoff began a 16 year old named Neville Ray King was shot dead on a sidewalk nearby. King was a student described as friendly and bright.

Rites Tuesday For Drowning Victims
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Bautista for Richard Glenn Ybarra 47 and his son Richard Jose Ybarra 9 who drowned at Lake Champion near Colorado City while attempting to rescue Mary Ybarra 12. Richard Ybarra was a Snyder Well Service employee. survivors include wife Carolyn two daughters Mary and Alice a son Richard Roy Ybarra of Nebraska his father Antonio Ybarra of Modesto Calif his mother Mrs Mary Caballero of Corpus Christi five brothers and five sisters.
