DETROIT AP. Elmer Fischer, a former Ford ironworker turned janitor, will retire at 65 with four degrees from Wayne State University. He earned a history bachelor, mortuary science bachelor, sculpture bachelor, and a master of fine arts, while also teaching and supervising in the mortuary science lab. He plans diverse options after retirement, from teaching sculpture at a small college to opening a studio or even becoming a funeral director.

In Brindisi Italy police arrested Greek ferry Heleanna captain Dimitrios Antipas on homicide and overloading charges after a fire killed at least 26 aboard the vessel. Colorado River Municipal Water District Lakes report well over 150000 acre feet this morning after week of heavy rainfall. Lake J. B. Thomas contains 63000 acre feet while Lake E. V. Spence near Robert Lee holds 93000 acre feet. Thomas reaches 2232.50 feet, highest in over two years. Spence at 1852.24 feet, historic high as it approaches full. Spillway elevations: Spence 1898, Thomas 2258 feet.
