City Council approves a basic plan for a major downtown renewal around Snyder Square. Architect J. D. Hinton outlines landscaping, protected parking, underground utilities, and new streets with concrete intersections and blacktop. Next steps involve utility firms, county officials, and the Texas Highway Department.
Funeral for John Sanders 45 a Snyder volunteer firefighter who died at an oil field fire near Monsanto Plant is set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church. Sanders born June 1 1921 in Electra served since 1956 and was named Fire man of the Year in 1964. He is survived by wife Jacquelyn Davis and a son Johnny, plus his parents and six sisters. Burial at Hillside Memorial Gardens directed by Bell Seale Funeral Home.
J B Thomas continued to pump water this morning after weekend rains but lake elevation at 9 15 am stood at 2243 16 feet about nine inches above Sunday. Colorado River fed the lake while Bull Creek slowed after a brisk flow earlier Monday.
Levi Duncan, a Texas Ranger for 31 years, died Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas. He retired February 1 at age 70.
Robert L. Smith resigns as Travis Junior High principal to take an administrative post at Bell High School in Hurst. Jack Gorman is promoted to Travis principal. Mrs. Smith leaves West Elementary for a position in Hurst Schools. Superintendent Dr. Robert Clinton expects an assistant principal to fill Gorman’s vacancy soon.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Bell Seale Funeral Home for Mrs. Jessie Pruitt 94 who died at Snyder Hospital at 10 45 p m Monday. She resided at 2603 Avenue F and was born June 26 1872. Survived by four daughters Mrs Veda Harless Mrs May Browning Mrs Euda Jolly and Mrs R W Prather and three sons R C Preston Jack Preston and Ewell Preston.
CLAWSON Michigan AP Julia Altman eagerly anticipates the new school year as her 7 year old quadruplets and five other children prepare to return to class. With younger children at home she expects less commotion as Paul aged 4 and John aged 2 stay with their parents while Chester Altman adds two bedrooms to their three bedroom house.
Viet Cong harassed allied shipping with an attack on a U S Navy river patrol boat near the Mekong Delta. Navy helicopters armed with Huey gunships took over operations from Army units aboard the Tortuga as a mine near a patrol boat caused no damage. Air strikes targeted oil depots and convoys while a U S Thunderchief was shot down near Dong Hoi. one pilot listed as missing.
A Chinese surge of about 500000 people demonstrated before the Soviet Embassy in Peking. Led by Red Guards, 200000 youths rallied Monday and continued today, carrying Mao portraits and banners denouncing revisionists. No explicit anti Russian shouts were reported.
In Phnom Penh Charles de Gaulle on arrival in Cambodia said the Vietnam conflict could lead the world to misfortune. He commented on the border war after landing from Djibouti as Prince Norodom Sihanouk alleged 250 men trained in Thailand to provoke trouble during the visit.
