Visibility improves from 20 to 60 70 feet as the team conducts early dives and inspects a transfer capsule for emergencies.
Athens reports King Constantine may form a coalition government to resolve Greece’s political crisis after Parliament defeated the 9 day Tsirimokos ministry 159 to 135. Tsirimokos resigned after meeting the king who may seek broad parliamentary support. Papandreou opposes any coalition unless he leads it.
AP Aerospace Writer reports Gemini 5 crew L Gordon Cooper Jr and Charles Conrad Jr undergo exhaustive medical exams aboard USS Lake Champlain to detect any symptoms after eight days in space. Officials say the crew is qualified for the moon mission and will soon travel to Cape Kennedy for 1 day of seclusion.
Space officials push Gemini 6 launch to October from Cape Kennedy with Walter Schirra Jr and Thomas Stafford aiming to rendezvous with a satellite. Radar issues on Gemini 5 prompt review but leaders expect a two day flight, batteries replacing fuel cells. The program eyes 1969 moon trip with Saturn V support amid Air Force funding for 30 day orbiting labs.
Two AFL-CIO maritime unions will urge rapid ratification of the four year no strike contract ending a 75 day port strike. The agreement raises economic benefits 3.2 percent, removes inequities among seagoing unions, and offers job security and pension guarantees while easing automation disputes. President Johnson hailed the settlement as advancing a responsible maritime policy.
U S B52 bombers hit Viet Cong positions in two weekend raids in South Viet Nam. An American plane was shot down over North Viet Nam. A Marine battalion near Da Nang killed an estimated 10 Viet Cong, with five confirmed by body count, while Marines shelled nearby targets with light casualties.
President Johnson announces Lawrence F. OBrien will replace John A. Gronouski as postmaster general at a Texas conference. Gronouski will become ambassador to Poland while John M Cabot moves to another post. Johnson also cites steel talks and Gemini 5 flight in remarks.
President Johnson personally intervenes in the steel talks with union leader W. Abel and U.S. Steel Corp executive R. Conrad Cooper, moving discussions to the White House as a nationwide strike looms. Officials say mediator William E. Simkin remains the chief mediator, with Morse and Collins reporting stalemate from Pittsburgh.
Mrs Vesta Mae Herod 82 of Snyder died at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. She a native of Grapeland and longtime Snyder resident. Funeral at 4 p m Tuesday First Methodist Church with Dr John A English officiating. Burial Hillside Memorial Gardens Bolger Funeral Home. Survived by daughter Mildred White four sons six grandchildren and siblings. Preceded by husband M C Herod who died February 1960.
LAREDO AP Dave Gallach er, 81, chief of police since 1944, died today. He formerly was a Texas Ranger. His widow, three sons and two daughters survive.
Snyder reports a sequence of temps with highs near 88 on Saturday and 9 degrees mis-copied near. For North Central Texas expect clear to partly cloudy warm with 20 percent shower risk late Tuesday and lows in 70s. Northeast Texas and Northwest Texas show similar warm conditions with isolated to scattered showers and highs reaching 85 to 98 in places.
Saigon Viet Nam AP reports the Strategic Air Command will expand B52 raids as they disrupt Viet Cong strongholds and morale. Two more B52 strikes over the weekend bring total to 14, with plans for about one daily strike in the near future to complicate Viet Cong defense.
