Norfolk Virginia AP report says Atlantic Fleet commander Adm. Harry D. Train II ordered ship captains to aggressively curb activities of racist organizations on board ships. Navy notes statements that Ku Klux Klan membership remains legal.
In Chicago the United Transportation Union joined clerks in a strike against the Rock Island Railroad, a major Midwest grain shipper, with about 2,500 members walking out at 6 am. The carrier, under federal bankruptcy reorganization for three years, says it cannot fund roughly 14 million dollars in retroactive pay for its unions.
Austin AP: The Texas Public Utility Commission staff recommended a 137.7 million dollar rate increase for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co, about seven and a half million below Bell’s request. Engineers and economists filed testimony, with officials noting a possible further one million reduction due to a calculation error. The three member commission will review the proposal when hearings begin September 4, with testimony expected to extend over more than a week.
Pope John Paul II will visit Boston New York Philadelphia Washington Chicago and Des Moines during a six day October tour of the United States Vatican officials said The pontiff also weighed a side trip to Northern Ireland during the Sept 29 to Oct 1 Irish visit but decided against it amid rising violence.

State media in Iran reported renewed fighting and new executions among Kurds in western Iran as a Mahabad delegation met officials in Tehran to seek an end to the rebellion. The interior minister vouched for progress on a key point, while a Kurd disputed it. A Kurdish garrison in Jaldian reportedly faced a six hour attack by KDP members, with casualties and outages cited.
