A ferry carrying more than 1,000 people caught fire in the Adriatic between Greece and Italy. At least 30 perished, with 850 to 870 survivors rescued as rescue ships battled rough seas. Scurry County Fair Dates Move to September in 1965 Style
The seventh annual Scurry County Fair will be held September 16 to 18 at Towle Memorial Park with exhibits in the park barn and National Guard Armory. Livestock, crops, textiles, baked goods, handicrafts, and art and flower shows are planned. Officers include Darrell Sims as president and H W Cargile as VP, with Jimmy Beck and Buford Browning leading livestock and agriculture divisions respectively. Buildings open September 15 at 1 p.m. to receive exhibits.

Settlement in Borden County oil tax suit ends dispute
Gail A settlement reported Friday in a tax suit by six oil companies against Borden County and its taxing agencies. The county will add only 1 million dollars in value to oil and gas property tax rolls while other property remains at last year’s assessed value. Original oil and gas assessments rose to 542 million beyond prior value, spurring the suit. Last year’s county valuations totaled 15.221 million. Out of court, the county also agreed to re evaluate all taxable property next year.

Nixon Hints Workers May Get Retroactive Pay
The Nixon administration floated the possibility that frozen wage hikes may be paid retroactively to workers as part of wage price sanctions. Mrs Meyers Dies Saturday in Seminole Hospital
Emma Meyers a former Snyder resident died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday in a Seminole hospital at age 88. Funeral arrangements were pending at Bell Seale. She was born in Hunt County and married W G Meyers on September 4 1900. Surviving are three daughters three sons four sisters a brother and several grandchildren.
