Scurry County delegates at the state convention in Amarillo debate Adlai Stevenson and the tidelands dispute. C. T. Mc Laughlin says he cannot back Stevenson fully or Nixon style Republicans but may give him a chance. Mrs. E. M. Inman doubts party endorsement of Stevenson and weighs possible Eisenhower support.
North-Central Fisher County reports the Fisher No. 1 Ellenburger well abandoned after reaching 6,257 feet with no productive shows from a four hour test and high bottomhole pressure. In Scurry County the No. 1 M. A. Fuller well was set at 7,606 feet and awaiting cement cure before perforation and tests. Murphy Corp No. 1 Smith in Fisher continues drilling with limited porosity in Ellenburger and oil shows on one mud recovery. Standard Oil No. 1 Jones in Howard County reaches 2,930 feet and prepares to test Permian zone after cementing casing at 2,704 feet. Continental Oil No. 1-A Martin in King region advances below 4,605 feet with a small drillstem test. Shell No. 1 Burnett Estate in King is at 6,718 feet and to plug back for Pennsylvanian test after Ellenburger shows.
Miami reports the season's first tropical hurricane arising in a squally area about 1000 miles east south east of Miami. A hurricane hunter plane measured winds near 85 mph in the northern semicircle. The 10 a.m. advisory placed the center at about 22.0 N, 65.0 W, roughly 250 miles north northeast of San Juan Puerto Rico.
A Senate internal security subcommittee report says pro Communist script writers spread subtle propaganda on radio and TV. Ruth Adams Knight testified the aim is derision of capitalism for simple listeners. The panel notes Voice of America writers are linked to a pro Communist faction and cites other probes into Communist influence. The 1943 infiltration of radio began under orders from Alexander Trachtenberg.
The DPA moved copper and aluminum off its scarcity list signaling improved metal supplies for defense and civilian production in 1953. Henry M. Fowler advised greater material availability by next April or sooner, enabling expanded arms and civilian output. NPA also projected higher material shipments by next April and lifted a two-year ban on certain recreational construction.
Fort Worth judge Frank P. Culver appears set to win the Democratic nomination for Place 1 on the Texas Supreme Court over Houston attorney Spurgen Bell. The Texas Election Bureau reported Culver 316,789 to Bell 308,420 with 252 of 254 counties counted. Incumbent Rep. Clark Thompson of Galveston narrowly beat Sheriff T. W. Buckshot Lane of Wharton County in the Ninth District race by 252 votes out of about 60,000.
Snyder businesses shut Monday for Labor Day as six legal holidays are observed by the Chamber of Commerce merchants committee led by Harold Bennett. County Judge Edgar Taylor notes courthouse closure and city secretary Clara Jones says city offices close. The Daily News will not publish that afternoon.
Scurry County now has two members of state executive committees of major political parties. Mrs. S. L. Surratt, chosen to the Republican state committee, was named from the twenty fourth district and served as an alternate to her husband at the San Antonio convention. She also attended the May 27 convention where she and her husband supported Eisenhower. She heads the Eisenhower for President campaign in Scurry County. C. T. McLaughlin seeks reelection to the Democratic executive committee with the Amarillo meeting set for Sept. 9 after being named a delegate by Scurry Democrats.

House Judiciary subcommittee hearings reveal how a 1951 St Louis grand jury was steered toward a whitewash in income tax probes. Foreman Butler and others testified they were schooled by revenue officials and that the district attorney urged a partial report. Finnegan later faced misconduct indictments. the case is on appeal.
In Austin and San Antonio politics swirl as Texas Republicans consider cross filing Democratic state candidates on the GOP ballot. Ben Guill asserts consent will not be withdrawn while Gov. Shivers and Atty. Gen. Daniel deny being consulted. Democrats react, and the issue hinges on party strategy ahead of September conventions.
At the New York American Legion gathering, a resolution called for the firing of Secretary of State Dean Acheson and other department leaders. The vote, reported amid applause, urged new, steadfast foreign policy leadership and criticized the UN as ineffective for world peace.
Texas polio cases dipped to 162 for the week ending Aug 23, the lowest since June 21, marking a break in the outbreak per State Health Officer George W. Cox. Harris led with 32 cases, followed by Dallas 15, Torrent 13, and Bexar 11, with multiple counties reporting small totals.
Sen. Allen J. Ellender of Louisiana says he will not campaign for Adlai Stevenson while still voting the Democratic ticket. He cites Stevenson drift toward Truman era policies and a shift on tidelands rights. Four Louisiana electors pledged to Stevenson resign. Ellender warns of possible large turnout gaps affecting the race.
Yesterday the temperature hit 104 degrees marking a 100 plus day on August 23. Weather observer Mrs. D. P. Strayhorn noted a low of 74 and a 7:30 am reading of 75.
Snyder reports no water shortage this summer while other West Texas towns face shortages. Acting city superintendent Rarphe Eades notes occasional milky water from air in wells but maintains high pressure citywide. He adds Lake Thomas dam near completion by Sept 1 and potential 40 feet of additional impoundment if rains occur. Sweetwater raises water rates amid shortages.
A long range Weather Bureau forecast predicts five more days of above normal heat with minimal rainfall across Texas. Dallas Fort Worth reports 25 straight days above 100 degrees while Fort Worth hits 41 such days this summer, surpassing 1941’s prior high. Normal highs and lows are projected to be exceeded by 2 to 5 degrees in Central and East Texas and by 2 to 4 degrees in West Texas.
East and South Central Texas see partly cloudy skies Wednesday through Thursday with scattered coastal activity. North Central and West Texas stay generally fair with isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms and little temperature change.
