Ten inches of rain drenched Manila in about fifteen hours causing devastating floods that left at least eight dead and fourteen injured. Two people died in the provinces as thousands remained stranded in waist high water, cars and buses stalled, and flights from Manila International Airport canceled.
The Texas Co. No. 1 Fuller, a North Scurry prospect, has reached total depth of 7606 feet and is setting seven inch casing before deeper drilling. The target Mississippian zone lies near the Winfield field, about nine miles west, with a prior test flow of 42 barrels per hour from 7586 to 7606 feet. Nearby wildcats in Borden and Fisher counties report drilling progress and marginal shows as crews press onward.
The Snyder Chamber of Commerce and the Texas Tech economics department discussed an industry survey aimed at identifying local facilities and potentials. Drs. Clover and Rouse offered to conduct the study with a $2250 budget, as Fred Husbands highlighted Texas advantages and local resources to attract plants.
FHA disaster loans remain available for farmers in Texas as drought worsens. L. J. Cappleman states funds exist under emergency loans at 3 percent for one year to cover feed, seed, and supplies. In Washington the House tax scandal probes reviewed a grand jury report that vindicated the St Louis IRS handling by James P Finnegan. Judge George H Moore called the report astonishing and questioned its independence as the panel’s inquiry into St Louis tax cases continued.
In Miami a 57 year old retired grocer killed his 18 year old daughter calling it a mercy killing. He led police to the body in the bathroom and said he could not bear his daughter's suffering. He claimed the girl had a lifelong nerve condition and the family could not care for her. He was held for murder as police investigated the case.
The heat wave persists across Texas with 110 degrees reported in Seymour and 106 in Fort Worth and other cities. Two more deaths in Gonzales raise the toll since August 1 to 20. FHA drought disaster loan details to be explained in Big Spring, while scattered showers offer limited relief.
Anglo press reaction to Dwight D. Eisenhower's New York Legion speech split along lines. The Manchester Guardian and the Morning Mirror warned the speech could escalate tensions and propaganda while The Graphic supported his call for preparedness and rejecting Soviet domination. London's Daily Worker condemned the address as brutal and reckless in its rhetoric.
A fourth day of vote counting left Place 1, State Supreme Court, and the 9th Congressional District undecided after Monday at 6 p.m. Culver led Bell in the Supreme Court race. Thompson and Buckshot Lane remained close in the 9th. Brooks leads Tonnhill in District 2. other races show partial returns from selected counties.
Temperatures topped 100 degrees for a second straight day in August. High reached 104 while the overnight low was 74. Morning reading at 7:30 was 78.
New York August 26 Republicans Styles Bridges and Joseph Martin say there will be no serious split in the party over Eisenhower. They report Taft supporters will join and back Eisenhower, noting a conference with Eisenhower at the Hotel Commodore. They expect Taft to be invited to help the campaign.
Salisbury report says Viola Miriam Goslee, age 55, evaded service for three years as officials sought petitions to settle her father's estate. Sheriff Pollitt arrested her after a field pursuit by a state trooper and deputy near her farm home. The case centers on estate administration and unadministered assets worth several thousand dollars.
Dallas Loyalist Democrats warn a third party could form to nominate electors pledged to Stevenson if the state convention does not commit Democratic electors to the governor. Attorney Tom Howard leads a 15 man pro administration delegation to Amarillo for the Sept. 9 convention and says he will help form the new party if needed.
A 26 year old bakery truck driver Ray Eugene Farmer is arrested and charged with grand larceny for stealing 65 000 from a Brink s armored car. Police recovered the full amount buried near Glen Echo Maryland after a tip from a farmer. FBI and Brink s officials aided in the investigation.
Royal Air Force Canberra pilot Wing Commander Roland Beaumont led a two leg crossing from Aldergrove to Newfoundland and back in 10 hours 4 minutes with a 2 hour stopover at Gander. The flight set a new west to east record under official timing, beating the former 20 hour 29 minute mark. Co pilots were Peter Hillwood and navigator Denis Watson.
Clear to partly cloudy Tuesday through Wednesday with scattered afternoon showers mainly near the coast. Temperatures show little change. Southeast coast winds gentle to moderate. North Central Texas and West Texas: generally fair with scattered afternoon and evening showers through Wednesday. Temperature remains steady.
