Pat Moore notes heavy rain and water abundance as Scurry County Rodeo Association enjoys a dry week. A visiting family from Electra thanks Snyder locals Mr. and Mrs. Cochran and others for kindness during a 20 month stay, urging continued community help as college town opportunities grow.
August 1971 becomes Snyder’s wettest month on record with 14.52 inches, 4.65 inches in 24 hours, surpassing 1920’s 11.27 inch record. Two day totals reached 6.52 inches, with Lake J. B. Thomas rising four feet in 24 hours and continued inflows from the Colorado River and Bull Creek. A funnel cloud appeared in Dallas but did not touch ground amid storms across North Central Texas.
On August 25 1971 history marks Paris liberation in 1944 revolutions and battles. Notable items include Iroquois attack on Montreal in 1689 and New Orleans founding by French immigrants in 1718. Uruguay independence declared in 1828 and Iran invasion in 1941.
Snyder reports a Tuesday high of 81 and a low of 64 with 7 am reading at 67 and 4.65 inches of precipitation. Northwest Texas sees partly cloudy skies with warm temps and scattered thundershowers mainly southeast tonight and Thursday, highs near 92 and lows around 57.
Scurry County Junior College District trustees approved Western Texas College budget for 1971 72 and tentatively accepted the first campus buildings. Dr Robert Hargrove was elected president, succeeding M L Broman. Budget totals include 912 542 in educational and general income with 727 431 in taxes. Facilities include Building No 7 vocational complex and two buses purchased from Snyder Independent.
Frederick C. Scheminske is named sales manager for Wickes Homes Snyder Texas plant overseeing all mobile home sales. Former Ritz Craft sales exec from Argos Indiana, he previously held roles with Commodore Odyssey and Liberty Homes. The firm operates plants in multiple states and markets.
Scurry County ASCS office offers official information on President Nixon's Aug 15 order covering prices rents wages and salaries. Roy M. Hanson, County Executive Director, heads a five-person staff including Helen Roberts and Bobby Hale. The office in Snyder Shopping Center will answer questions but not handle complaints or interpretations, directing issues to IRS districts.
Western Texas College will start registering its first students tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Orientation for full-time students opens, with staggered registration by last name from 8:30 to 5:00 today and 6:30 p.m. evening classes on Thursday and Friday. Dr. Robert L. Clinton urged local residents to enroll in day or evening courses to support the college.
AP reports a string of blasts at Cam Ranh Bay ammunition dump disrupted U S Air Force operations for nine hours. Witnesses described giant explosions shaking the base as U S Command investigated the cause while noting increased enemy activity across South Vietnam during the legislative election.
Washington AP AFL-CIO leaders plot action against Nixon wage-price controls in courts Congress and on picket lines amid mortgage rate relief. Police probe a fatal shooting of Guy Roy Dulen 47, found slumped in his car on I-20 two miles west of Roscoe about 7 am. Ranger Graves reports the homicide occurred 5 to 6:30 am. A hitchhiking Mexican male suspect, 5-10, blue jeans, light shirt, remains at large. Dulen last seen at the ’76 Cafe west of Sweetwater around 1:30 am.
