Last of six Iowa convicts still at large after prison escape
Authorities on both sides of the Mississippi hunted the final escapee from the Iowa penitentiary as three other inmates surrendered after seizing a minister and his family at knife point during the Sunday break. One escapee, Charles Carlyle, remained at large with Arllie Harrison Elliott, who fled after a vehicle pursuit north of Fort Madison.

Coed Found Stabbed Near USC in Apparent Attack
Linda Edne Martin a 21 year old music major was stabbed to death in an apartment near the University of Southern California. Police questioned 27 year old G Robert Kinzie a graduate art student who said they planned to marry this year. Officials noted she was found nude at the foot of stairs and rushed to escape through a locked door. It was unclear if rape occurred.

Second Negro Pupil Integrates Central High School
In Little Rock Arkansas Carlotta Walls became the second Negro student admitted to Central High with no protests. Jefferson Thomas also integrated, having attended Chicago summer school. Hall High School welcomed three Negro girls who entered classes peacefully. Elizabeth Eckford arrived but only stayed one day as she has sufficient credits for college. About 17 other applicants were assigned to Horace Mann High and boycotted the school.

Jail Fire Kills Eight In Ocean County Seat

Evans Rites Held Today
A funeral service for Mrs. Morgan Evans was held at Bell Funeral Home Chapel at 10:30 a.m. She died about 7 a.m. yesterday at her Snyder home. Born March 31, 1908 in Limestone County she married Morgan Evans in 1933 and lived in Tyler Wichita Falls San Angelo before Snyder. She belonged to the First Christian Church. Burial will follow in Crestview Cemetery Wichita Falls after another 10:30 a.m. service tomorrow at Hampton-Vaughn Funeral Home. Survivors include her husband two daughters Mary and Sara Evans three sisters four brothers.
