Ranger I mission ends in near earth orbit failure
NASA launched an Atlas Agena rocket carrying Ranger I with a 675 pound piggyback payload to test space launch platform techniques for Moon Mars and Venus. The second stage did not place Ranger I on the planned highly elliptical orbit, leaving the craft in near Earth orbit with data being analyzed to determine what went wrong. Ranger II remains available for a possible repeat mission later.
