The Hebgen Lake quake in Montana leaves nine confirmed dead and many travelers still missing. Relatives across the nation await word while Red Cross officials in Helena report 1500 to 1800 inquiries about various families and nine known dead.
Scurry County reports the season’s first cotton bale ginned by Gray O. Webb of Ira last Tuesday. Webb will auction the bale at a farmer business dinner. Local moisture concerns linger as Nolan von Roeder notes 15 percent of cotton lacks moisture. A brief lightning storm caused a power outage across several towns.
Hubert Baker aged 20 was fatally slashed by a pocket knife Friday night in Mt. Pleasant Texas in the Negro section. A 21 year old Negro was detained as a suspect or witness.
Eleven days after a warning call a pair of masked men in Alpine hats robbed Community Savings Bank Yorkville at 10:37 a.m. taking 38856 dollars. They wore blue seersucker suits, dark glasses, and goatees, and escorted customers to the vault before fleeing.
Washington AP reports a 14 member panel faces a difficult week as they tackle the final title of the labor bill. Kennedy leads the Senate House panel amid party split over Taft Hartley changes and union rights with Eisenhower pressure looming. Goldwater aims for a Tuesday deadline.
A two car crash 10 miles north of Cleveland Texas killed five people on Saturday. The Johnson family from Barber's Hill included Freddy Paul Johnson 55 Leona Johnson 50 and their son Charles Wendell Johnson 18. Also killed were George C Brannon 24 from Live Oak Florida and Enoch Carl Knigh ton 29 of Houston. Harold Johnson 16 was seriously injured. Cleveland lies 74 miles northeast of Houston. Barber's Hill is 15 miles north of Baytown.
Gov. Daniel urged Texans to exert strenuous effort to make Labor Day weekend the safest holiday in years. The Department of Public Safety said drinking drivers were involved in 42 percent of fatal Texas highway crashes last year, up from 34 percent in 1957.
Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell announced a special survey next week to measure the steel strike impact on employment in construction mining and metalworking. He said no immediate settlement is expected and that the shutdown's effects are severe and likely to widen in coming weeks.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev will visit six cities outside Washington from September 15 to 27. The itinerary includes New York City Los Angeles San Francisco Des Moines Ames Iowa and Pittsburgh with Henry Cabot Lodge as his personal representative. A truck carrying Mexican farm workers overturned on a farm road nine miles northeast of here. One worker, Felix Estrada Cruz, 24, died and about 30 were injured. the driver was uninjured. The passengers were thrown from the vehicle as it rolled. The braceros, contracted by West Side Labor Assn. of Pharr, Texas, were en route to the border to return to Mexico.
The Texas Tech board elected Dr R C Goodwin acting president effective Sept 1, succeeding Dr E N Jones who resigned for health reasons. Goodwin will keep academic vice president duties in addition to the presidency. Jones becomes dean of instruction at MidWestern University in Wichita Falls. C I Wall of Amarillo named chairman, succeeding W D Watkins of Abilene. Floyd Wooldridge named vice chairman.
Police raid a bookmaker in Buenos Aires but find no evidence until a dog flees with a rubber doll. Officers recover the doll and uncover betting slips hidden inside, revealing the illegal operation.
Steven Rockefeller, son of New York Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, wed Anne Marie Rasmussen in a 45 minute Norwegian Lutheran ceremony in her village church. The couple met when she worked as a maid in the Rockefeller Fifth Avenue home and received a traditional church service guided by Rev. Olav Gautestad.
Weather outlook for Texas reports high temperatures around 102 degrees with a 70 degree reading at 7 30 am and 74 degrees for Saturday. East and South Central Texas see partly cloudy skies through Sunday with scattered daytime thundershowers and little temperature change. North Central Northwest and Southwest Texas experience partly cloudy conditions through Sunday with isolated thunderstorms and minimal temperature change.
