Speaker Rayburn said House Democrats will consider a GOP compromise proposal on the stalled civil rights bill. He hopes for a right-to-vote bill this session but warned no commitment to accept the plan.
Citizens discuss paving the eight mile unpaved Roundtop Road from Cogdell Memorial Hospital toward the Ira Dunn farm road. The route serves a wide mix of residents, school buses, and rural mail carriers near precincts 3 and 4. A junior college plan faces legislative revisions after state recommendations. A firearms maker markets pastel .22 pistols for women, per Wall Street Journal.
Frank W. Brewster, Western boss of the Teamsters, was sentenced to one year in jail and fined 1000 dollars for contempt of Congress. Judge John Sirica denied probation and let Brewster remain free on 1000 dollars bond pending appeal. His June conviction stemmed from refusing to produce records and answer questions before the Senate Investigations subcommittee in January challenging its authority.
Twenty Chinese refugees arrived in Hong Kong after five days at sea in a small open boat, facing rough waves during their voyage from Communist China.

Brownsville workers at a large synthetic gasoline plant suffered severe burns during a plug removal on a platform 20 feet above the floor. R. W. Rankin died about an hour after the incident, R. R. Mancus died later, and Dale Sheek remained severely burned with condition improved the next day. Plant manager L. L. Smith said damage to the plant was negligible.

A 2 year old, Kimdale Smith, fell into a 17 foot test hole on a farm near Big River Saskatchewan. About 100 volunteers and two bulldozers dug a tunnel and freed him five hours later. He suffered no injuries and remained in good condition.
Providence residents rejoice as 3 year old Eileen Fahey is freed from a crack between a garage and a barbershop after a nightlong search. Gerald des Roches spotted the girl from a second story window and workers removed the final wall segment to rescue her. Police call the search the largest in the city’s history with 200 officers and hundreds of volunteers.
Washington IRS agents seized four illegal stills in Texas and arrested five persons for illegal whisky making or possession, according to the Treasury Department.
City manager Roy Dunlap announced a study of possible urban renewal housing for Snyder. Architect R W Ackridge visited, collected data, and will draft plans for city review. Federal officials deem Snyder eligible for urban renewal with three potential housing methods under consideration. No sites or commitments yet.
The Senate Rackets Committee aired a 1953 Hoffa Dio telephone recording in which Hoffa pledged access to New York taxi drivers but claimed the aim was Teamsters control over 30,000 cabs. He denied seeking to undermine Dio's cab drive and faced questions on hotel bills and Louis appearance fees.
In San Antonio a 30 year old man was arrested after hours at a tavern. He failed to identify himself and flashed a card reading Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. He was booked for drinking after hours.
Representative Robert R Patterson states Texas traffic laws allow special motor scooter licenses for ages 14 to 16. Applicants apply to the highway department driver’s license bureau and must pass the same written and driving exams as regular licenses. Engines under five horsepower allowed. engines over five horsepower prohibited for this age group.
Two persons injured in a two car crash at Thirtieth Street and Avenue G after noon. Mary Draper Brecheen 24 of Thirty-second Street knee injury. Bon Dail Lentz 17 of Twenty-ninth Street head injuries treated at Battenfield Jones Hospital Clinic. Both cars heavily damaged.
Snyder area reports 98 high and 61 low with 65 degrees at 7 30 am today. East and South Central Texas expect clear to partly cloudy skies with isolated showers near the coast. North Central Texas remains clear to partly cloudy with little temperature change. West Texas will be clear to partly cloudy with widely scattered thunderstorms mainly from Pecos Valley westward.
July saw a 1.0 percent overall rise in the cost of living marking an eleventh straight monthly increase. Food prices climbed 0.7 percent pushing the CPI to 120.8 percent of the 1947-49 base with about 1.3 million workers set for wage boosts of 1 to 6 cents an hour under escalator clauses.
Clear skies covered Texas with scattered showers forecast for most areas except North Central Texas. Dawn temperatures ranged from 66 degrees at Lufkin to 83 at Galveston while Wednesday highs reached up to 100 at Presidio and Wichita Falls and 88 at Corpus Christi and Alpine. The national trend showed little change with a general warmup, some wet spots, and light showers from southern New England to Maryland, plus nearly 3 inches of rain in Miami in 24 hours.
William Engelhardt, 21, held six people hostage for five hours at a Healdsburg area ranch after storming in with a .45 caliber pistol. He was overpowered by two victims and a posse member as authorities closed in. he faces a robbery charge.
