Other events include Washington's 1776 Brooklyn escape, Harrison's birth in 1833, Brussels occupation in 1914, Dnieper Dam destruction in 1941, riots in Morocco and Algeria in 1955, East German border wall in 1961, LBJ on riots, Israel peace talks, and Ford naming Nelson Rockefeller as VP.
Weather bulletin reports high Tuesday near 91 degrees and a low around 65, with 7 am reading at 68. Northwest southwest Texas expect partly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms from mountains westward through Thursday, while other areas remain mostly fair.
Federal judge grants restraining order forcing Houston longshoremen to resume loading wheat aboard the Bosanka bound for Russia. The Commerce Department reports July personal income fell at an annual rate of 5.7 billion dollars while the private sector shows growth slowing. June’s one time social security payment and a cost of living adjustment partly offset the decline, with manufacturing payrolls inching up and several industries posting losses.
The final step to make Scurry County an official Bicentennial community is a 6:30 p.m. ceremony on the courthouse lawn. County Judge Preston Wilson will receive the flag from Joel Horton, with State Senator Ray Farabee as guest speaker and Delbert Downing as master of ceremonies. The Snyder Chamber of Commerce Goldcoaters provide lemonade. the Bicentennial Orchestra performs. Scurry County is among 300 Texas areas and 5,000 nationally eligible to fly the Bicentennial flag.
Funeral service for Clemens Nelson von Roeder 86 is set for 3 p.m. at Bell-Seale Funeral Home Chapel. He died Tuesday at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Burial will be at Hillside Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers include Milton Brooks Max von Roeder Birdwell Burney Howard Shifflett Weldon Brooks Bill Brooks Bruce Murphy and J N Sterling. Von Roeder was a prominent agriculturist and seed breeder who founded Von Roeder Seed Farms and contributed to Snyder business and civic life.
The State Insurance Board plans an October 1 hearing on auto insurance with rate changes likely by December 15. Last year rates rose 8.8 percent, and industry losses drive inflation in physical damage coverage. Chairman Joe Christie faces pressure to curb consumer costs amid pending data.
Barry Meeker a Hartford Connecticut native living in Munich said in a hospital bed he piloted three helicopter rescues from Czechoslovakia carrying 11 East German defectors to the West. He cited $4000 from a Munich contact as guarantees for his family, not fees, and faces possible charges for illegal border crossing and false flight plans, while recovering from gunshot wounds.
