President Nixon at the Western White House says his wide ranging economic program has some problems yet public support remains high. He plans a welfare reform conference with Governor Ronald Reagan and to announce a 630 bed VA hospital at Loma Linda University to replace the quake damaged LA area facility. Nixon urged backing of his economic measures at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in Dallas.
AUSTIN AP House investigators paused public hearings into a stock fraud scandal as they weigh claims that the inquiry is a partisan hatchet job. The five member General Investigating Committee recessed after Waggoner Carr accused the effort of being politically driven by the Washington Republican administration. Rep. Menton Murray said he would invite assistant U.S. Attorney General Will Wilson to testify within three weeks. Wilson, a Democrat former state attorney general who later served in the Nixon administration, is linked to Houston banker Frank W. Sharp.
Snyder Independent School District will hold fall term registration Monday afternoon for grades one through six at each elementary school from 1 p.m. to 4 30 p.m. Kindergarteners register at Central Elementary. Parents must register children, with birth certificates for first grade and kindergarten and health records for first time enrollees. Lunch tickets and a $2 activity fee apply.

Saigon reacted to the exit of Duong Van Minh from the presidential race with the threat of reduced U.S. aid. Senator Robert J. Dole warned Congress would react politically as Thieu remained the sole candidate. Minh accused Thieu of rigging the election and called the campaign a dirty farce.

Gov Preston Smith defends his Sept 1 pay raise order for state workers and teachers in defiance of the Nixon wage price freeze. He says he urged action a year ago and criticizes the administration for dragging its feet on inflation while noting his vetoes and budget cuts. White House accuses him of seeking preferential treatment amid national inflation concerns.
In the thirty fifth annual Scurry County Rodeo second night, riders stayed aboard more often as J D Greathouse of Houston led bareback with 68 on Rattler followed by Johnny Morris of Biddle Montana at 57. Rae Moore and Connie Robertson posted 55 and 43, while four contestants failed to stay aboard. Mark McCloy and Greathouse tied for saddle bronc at 55 on Gun Smoke and Hotshot, as Dan Corr trailed with 53 and Wes Hertzog scored 44.
Lt. William L. Calley Jr. had his life sentence for My Lai murders reduced to 20 years by Lt. Gen. Albert O. Connor at Ft. Benning. The ruling lowers the case to ongoing review toward Nixon and potential further reduction. Latimer said Calley could be parole-eligible after about seven years. The attorney noted relief and hoped for final appeal resolution.
