In Jackson Mississippi eleven Negroes registered today to attend white public schools after the city lowerd first grade racial barriers under a federal court desegregation order. Galloway and Watkins schools reported one Negro each within ten minutes of registration. Both boys were escorted by parents. No incidents occurred as police monitored quiet grounds.
Marlene Dietrich scored a triumph in her singing debut in Taormina at the Songs of the World festival. Italian critics praised her performance during the Wednesday night appearance.
Washington AP President Johnson signed the 947.5 million anti poverty measure into law to improve living conditions for millions. The act adds jobs literacy and training programs including Youth Conservation Corps and targets low income Negro families and youths. The authorization runs through fiscal 1965 with future funding to be appropriated by Congress. Sargent Shriver touted reach to 600000 people first year and up to 7 million families via community action projects.
