An estimated four million dollars in sunken treasure remains aboard the Andrea Doria as a 26 day recovery effort ends with only a few silver pieces recovered. Divers Chris Delucchi and Donald Rodecker report the hull interior is now a hazardous wreck, while most treasure lies off Nantucket guarded by sharks. The mission tested saturation diving, with the divers living in a chamber named Mother for eight days.

Mexico Crash Kills 16. Four U.S. Residents Hurt
A fiery collision on the Monterrey Monclova highway left at least 16 dead and 40 injured, including Ludwig Bergant and Esperanza Bergant of Chicago and Elvira Cantú and Rosa Llano of El Paso. The bus struck a car and a trailer truck, gasoline ignited, and bodies remained in seats. Mario De la Garza of Monclova died in the crash.

Youth Found Dead in Scurry County Field
The body of 16 year old Johnny Dale Foster was found in a field about a mile west of his Snyder area home. A .20 gauge shotgun was found near the body and he apparently died from a gunshot wound. Graveside rites were held at Hillside Memorial Garden with minister Richard Williams officiating. Foster, born February 3 1957 in Madill Oklahoma, had lived in Scurry County 11 years. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs C E Foster Sr and two brothers C E Foster Jr of Snyder and Gary Foster of Lubbock.

Break In Weather Aids Firefighters Contain Major Fires
Cooling temperatures and lighter winds aided crews fighting 19 major fires across six western states. Interagency Fire Center spokesman Dick Klade said four thousand acres were burned, with about 40,000 acres charred overall and a $5 million timber threat. Containment efforts continued as five Washington fires, two Idaho fires, and two Montana fires were reported contained.

Born March 25, 1891 in Van Zandt County, he lived in Scurry County since 1948 and was married to Alva Mary Douthet in 1913. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, two sons, three sisters, two brothers, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
