Snyder area reports a 103 degree high and 71 degree low with a 7 am reading of 73. Northwest Texas expects clear to partly cloudy hot weather with possible late storms in the Panhandle and highs of 96 to 104. North Central and Northeast regions stay hot and fair to partly cloudy with scattered showers in the east. South Central to Southwest Texas show hot conditions with varying chances of thunderstorms and highs from 92 to 106.
Rescue teams found 23 bodies in Pass Christian, lifting the toll to at least 128 with 150 to 200 expected. Cuba added three fatalities. Officials set a wartime response to speed aid as Nixon declares coastal Mississippi a disaster area and airlifts move supplies to Biloxi and Bay St. Louis.
Scurry County Commissioners set the 1970 budget at 3,161,864 and reduced the tax rate from 95 to 88 cents per $100 valuation. The 1970 valuation rises to 138 million, boosting revenue and allowing the rate drop. The plan covers hospital operations and Hermleigh Water Works with bonds on a coliseum paid off by 1978.
James G. Randle 84, a retired farmer and rancher, died Monday at Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Funeral Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church with burial at Camp Springs Cemetery. Survived by wife Menta Kite, two daughters, two stepdaughters, one stepson, sister Flora Allen, brother John Randle, and several grandchildren.
Mrs. Ruth Haass aged about 45 from Lubbock and grandson Michael Haass 5 sustained minor injuries in a one car crash on U S 84 about 9.4 miles northwest of a town at 3 30 p m yesterday They were taken to Cogdell Memorial Hospital by Snyder Ambulance Service Mrs Haass head injuries and the boy multiple lacerations The granddaughter Debbie 3 escaped injury Investigating highway patrolmen said the 1968 Pontiac left the highway struck a culvert and skidded down the culvert The car was demolished but did not overturn All three were en route to Lubbock The children live in Euless.
Tomorrow is registration day for Snyder Independent School District pupils. New junior and senior high students must register at their schools from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All elementary pupils report at the same times to their respective schools.
A fragment of the Texas tax conference team met briefly in Austin before adjourning with only four of ten conferees present. Rep Bill Heatly and Sen H J Blanchard criticized the lack of a full panel, while Rep Ben Atwell and Sens Don Kennard and Jack Strong waited for an 8 am session that did not occur. Speaker Gus Mutscher and Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes planned to issue guidance for the 10 member panel, but offered no update at the meeting.

Airborne scientists seed Hurricane Debbie with silver iodide crystals to try to freeze the 100 mph storm. Observation planes scouted the storm center from Monday noon to early today with more flights planned Wednesday. The aim is to reveal if cloud seeding can sap a hurricane’s heat and energy.
