The Layfield Ira Gin processed Scurry County’s first 1962 cotton bale a 540 pound lot brought by Jim Stirling from his Ira-area farm. He picked 4 from 45 acres planted on a plant two skip two pattern yielding 1900 pounds of bolls for the bale. Observers expect middling grade with 29 to 32 staple.

An armed suspect held Maxwell Carey his wife and infant at gunpoint for about an hour in Roswell New Mexico and escaped after looting an estimated 18000 from Farrs Supermarket. Carey directed the safe opening and the family was later released near their home.

The Fifth Circuit at New Orleans reversed a Lubbock conviction of Standard Oil Co. of Texas and Pasotex Pipe Line Co. on Connally Hot Oil Act charges. The court held neither company liable for acts of its employees and dismissed the indictment, ordering both companies found innocent.
Senator Henry M. Jackson says the Soviet Union is rapidly advancing in atomic submarine development and calls for stepped up US production of attack submarines. He spoke as Haddo, a nuclear attack submarine, is launched at New York Shipbuilding Corp. in Camden.
The Rev. Cecil C. Rhodes longtime West Side Baptist Church pastor and Scurry County native died in his sleep at his Big Spring home Saturday. He served since 1933 in multiple Texas churches before relocating to Big Spring in 1944. Funeral at Baptist Temple Monday with Dr P D O'Brien officiating. burial in Trinity Memorial Park. He is survived by his widow Alma Elizabeth Bills and four sons, two brothers, and four sisters.
Lady Churchill said her husband Sir Winston, age 87, is very well after a thigh fracture from a Monte Carlo fall. He has been in Middlesex Hospital since June 29 and a ground floor suite was prepared at his Hyde Park Gate home in London.
Snyder's Schools set opening with registration for high school on Aug 28 to 30 and elementary, junior high, and preschool registrations on Aug 29 and 30. Seniors, juniors, and sophomores register on assigned days while new students and changes visit the high school office. First day of classes Sept 4.
