Rep Frank Thompson says a crank hurled a liquid believed to be acid at his car near the Capitol. FBI tests a sample while Thompson cites no connection to his labor control stance, though threats were rumored.
The bill would raise veterans pensions by 10 billion dollars over 40 years and covers those with nonservice connected disabilities and their dependents. The Senate completed action by withdrawing a Senate amendment objected to by the House. The bill passed Senate 86 to 6 and House 226 to 34, well over two thirds, despite administration opposition and possible veto.
The Duke of Bedford, 42, was critically injured in a car crash in the south of France. His secretary said he planned to visit the United States in October to appear on television and lecture on the British aristocracy.
Washington AP reports House and Senate conferees agreed on a 2.4 million dollar appropriation for a civil defense regional headquarters bomb shelter at Denton Texas. The Senate had proposed 2.7 million and the shelter would act as a prototype for seven additional regional defense HQs. The conference report awaits House approval and Senate action remains uncertain.
Eight people were confirmed killed after a major quake near Hebgen Dam and the Madison River valley in southwest Montana. Rescue teams used jeeps boats and helicopters to reach those marooned, with about 60 injured and fears the toll could rise beyond 13.
The Snyder school board voted to abandon planned changes to two bus routes serving Ennis Creek and Cottonwood Flat. Parents argued they lacked notice, noting 51 East Elementary area students attended Northeast last year due to crowded East classrooms. Officials said overall district education levels stay constant and vowed stricter zoning next year.
Ira farmer Gray O Webb ginned Scurry County’s first bale for 1959 at his Ira gin after fielding 18 to 20 acres. The 410 pound bale required a second trip to reach 400 pounds. The Snyder Chamber plans to auction the bale for a $200 cash premium with proceeds to benefit local agriculture.

USGS geologist W. B. Myers ties the Montana tremor to a major movement along a steep rock fault west of the Madison River Valley. He notes the fault lies in very old rocks with no known historic quake activity and says deep underground geology is not well understood.
