Mrs. R C Bearden of San Angelo told the State Textbook Committee that Introductory Biology by John Wiley and Sons should not be used in high schools. She argued the book treats evolution as fact rather than theory, aligning with a DAR stance against bias in science education. The publisher proposed labeling the book as presenting evolution as theory, which Bearden dismissed as insufficient.
AP reports escaped Nazi war criminal Herbert Kappler is in the Luenburg area and will probably be allowed to live as a free man. District Attorney Gerhard Reifenberg says West Germany cannot extradite him to Italy to finish a life sentence due to the constitution.
Ambassador Andrew Young, after a 12 day Caribbean tour, said U S standing in Latin America and worldwide hinges on Senate ratification of the new Panama Canal treaty. He warned that failure would be very serious and unacceptable, stressing the agreement is essential.

Fans of all ages mourn Elvis Presley at Graceland after the rock icon’s death from a heart ailment. His body lay in a copper steel casket at the mansion with public view scheduled 3 to 5 p.m. CDT, as security and traffic control protected mourners.
U.S. Representative Bob Krueger of New Braunfels is due in Snyder tomorrow around noon. He will be hosted by Roger B. Mrs. Foy Westmoreland of 403 32nd Street won last week's Sny der Merchants Sizzler Contest and receives $50 in merchant money. The weekly contest has awarded over $1,000 in merchant money to local residents during the campaign. Westmoreland is noted as the final Sizzler Winner of the current period.

Businesses increased inventories by seven ten ths of one percent in July, a slower rise than June. Total inventories rose $8 billion in Q2 with $214.2 billion total in June. A Tulsa report notes a kidnapping suspect was found near Oral Roberts University campus, Carl Justice III taken into custody.
