Bill R Wise aged 31 a Snyder salesman was elected state vice president for region 4 of the Junior Chamber of Commerce after five ballots in Fort Stockton The Abilene club changed its vote to Wise on the fifth ballot and all clubs followed giving him a unanimous vote He will serve eight months to finish R E Red Hightower's term in San Angelo Also Sweetwater will host the next bi region Jaycee convention in February.
White House talks set plan to declare the Communist party unlawful as such. Congress would erase its legal status while not criminalizing individual membership, shifting focus from members to the party itself amid anticommunist drive.
Both Democratic runoff candidates for Texas governor paused campaigning after Sunday appearances framed as non-political. Governor Allan Shivers touted his record while Ralph Yarborough issued a sharp reply, criticizing Texas on public health and education and pledging to expose perceived deficiencies in Shivers’ tenure.

Sunday highs ranged from the mid 90s to 105 at Presidio, with coastal points near 90. Rain totals included .13 inch at El Paso and .01 at Victoria by 6:30 p.m. A Harlingen baseball game was rained out.

American Air Line pilots face layoffs and grounded flights while Kohler Co workers vote to extend a 19 week walkout. American Safety Razor reaches a wage deal with the United Electrical Workers and vows no move to Staunton VA until May.
U S Senator Flanders proposes a high level Big Four conference to approve an independence treaty for Austria as a test of Soviet good faith. He says Eisenhower might attend if the agenda focuses on Austria and cites simple solvable Austrian issues. He blames Soviet rulers for the failure to reach an agreement.
Two Polish youths aged are reported to have crossed the Baltic Sea in a canoe and landed on Bornholm in Denmark last night seeking asylum after the 60 mile voyage from the Iron Curtain. Authorities described them as hungry and exhausted.

East Texas reports clear to partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers near the coast and light to moderate east and southeast winds. South Central Texas stays partly cloudy with showers in the extreme south and scattered showers and thundershowers elsewhere through Tuesday with some easterly coastal winds.
The Scurry-Borden Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis launches an emergency drive through Aug 31 aiming to raise 4000 dollars. Led by attorney Fred Auforth and supported by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Shrine, American Legion, and local banks. Donations accepted by Auforth, Joe Stinson, Forrest Beavers, and the Snyder National and West Texas State Banks.
In a non presidential year the county sees many absentee ballots. By noon 74 ballots were issued by the county clerk and 53 returned. Four years ago 66 voted absentee in the second primary. Two years ago about 250 voted absentee in the second primary. Nearly 400 voted in the first primary. This year about 300 voted absentee in the first primary, roughly three fourths of the two year ago amount.
Washington Sen. Watkins heads a six member committee aiming to finish a report on censure charges against Sen. McCarthy by Oct. 1. Sen. Knowland and Sen. George warn action may miss October deadline due to reelection campaigns. testimony may be limited and prior documents used. Flanders and Fulbright oppose McCarthy's delay as charges include financial issues and remarks about officials.
