On this date in 1914 the Panama Canal opened to traffic and in 1769 Napoleon Bonaparte was born on Corsica. Other milestones include the 1935 crash that killed Will Rogers and Wiley Post near Point Barrow Alaska and 1944 the Allied invasion of southern France began.
The forecast covers Snyder and regional Texas zones with high temperatures around 90s to over 100. Northwest Texas expects clear to partly cloudy skies with late thunder showers. North Central and Northeast Texas show scattered thundershowers. South Central and Southeast Texas stay hot with late storms. Southwest and West of the Pecos stay hot with scattered showers and highs from mid 90s to 108.

Philip Blaiberg, 60, the world’s longest surviving heart transplant patient, was readmitted to Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town after condition deterioration. The transplanted heart reportedly runs at one third of normal pressure and his kidneys are not functioning properly. Tests to find the relapse cause continued with no bulletin planned today.
Severe thunderstorms swept Texas from the Panhandle to the Lower Texas Coast with 60 mph winds and up to 2.78 inches of rain at Austin. Damage ranged to 200000 dollars in Bell County as homes, a mobile studio, and roofs were damaged. injuries were minor near Harker Heights. Lightning outages hit power and a hospital roof and airport hangars were damaged. A tornado in Zion Hill wrecked a farm garage near Weatherford.
Snyder area hoped to break a four day run above 100 degrees with a forecast of possible showers. Showers around midnight did not materialize, only a few drops in Snyder while nearby areas recorded a tenth inch or more. Thunder and lightning moved across the region, dampening the mood.
John E. Sentell, a Snyder attorney and civic figure, died at 4 a.m. in Hendrick Memorial Hospital Abilene after a period of illness. Funeral plans were pending. He chaired the charter drafting for Snyder's city government, served on the Scurry County Industrial Foundation, and was active in Democratic politics. Surviving: his wife, a daughter Mary Harbaugh of Anacortes Washington, three sons Marvin Austin Joe and Sears, and two sisters.
A public welcoming ceremony is planned for 7 15 p m on the north side of the courthouse square for Folke With a new AFS exchange student from Norway arriving to live with the Martin Terrells and attend Snyder High School during the 1969 70 year under the American Field Service sponsorship.
