Delegates convene at Convention Hall Chicago as favorite sons linger on key votes aiding Adlai Stevenson and Averell Harriman. AP poll shows Stevenson leading on first ballots with Harriman trailing. Truman’s backing adds pressure as civil rights plank debates loom and platform adoption is eyed for Wednesday night.
William Clark a 39 year old from Los Angeles was seen tossing money from his car at Georgia Street Receiving Hospital. Police report he tore up about $200 to $300 in twenties and $400 in travelers checks seeking to punish himself after quitting his Hollywood drive in job three days earlier.
Houston records another traffic tragedy as Johnnie Wiggins, 30, is killed crossing the Eastex Freeway after a truck strike. In Baytown, 14 year old Johnny Tors dies when a car hits his unlit scooter in a head on crash.
The Arab League warned that any attack on Egypt over the Suez crisis would be considered aggression against all Arab states. Egypt backed a 45 nation conference for canal guarantees while Britain airlifted troops and transported dependents from the canal zone to Malta.
Senator Lyndon Johnson addressed about 300 Texas Democrats promising no steal of the September state convention and pledging a loyal executive committee. Delegates praised Johnson as the likely next president while urging unity to support the national ticket. Former Rep. John Lyle and Sen. Tom Connally urged the party to back Johnson as Sam Rayburn recalled past divisions at state conventions.
CHICAGO Democratic National Convention opens with a full day schedule. First session begins at noon with invocation and the Star Spangled Banner. Remarks by Paul M. Butler and others follow including Gov Marvin Griffin and Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley. Second session at 8 p.m features Butler report, Kennedy film, and Roosevelt address.
Adlai E Stevenson and former President Truman met at a breakfast hosted by Mayor Richard J Daley in Chicago. They greeted each other briefly and sat apart as Stevenson stayed about 10 minutes before leaving. Truman offered generic support for the Democratic nominee. Other attendees included Estes Kefauver Hubert Humphrey and Robert Wagner.
Washington report from the International Cotton Advisory Council predicts a substantially higher export demand for U S cotton in the coming year. World free stock outside the U S is described as extremely low, while U S stocks reach a record carryover.
Clem-son area report notes G C Cleve Gibson attended school three weeks while his six children earned four Clemson College degrees. Two men, Frank Gilmer aged 21 and Newton Phelps aged 36, were jailed on assault charges in Houston for allegedly attacking a polio patient. The victim, a 27 year old housewife, became paralyzed in an arm and a leg after contracting polio several months ago.
In Los Angeles at the California Cosmetologist Assn. convention nearly 150 stylists showcased the bouffant, a helmet-like flaring side cut with a blue tint described as the modern touch of 1912. An expert notes blue is fashionable this season.
A petition with 815 signatures urges the county to keep the Twenty third Street site for the new county library as plans advance. Delegations seek museum space in the building for local history, but the court says space depends on final plans and a library board.
Florida East Coast from Daytona Beach to Miami placed on hurricane watch as Betsy, a tropical storm with 110 mph winds, moves northwest 19 mph toward the Bahamas. Puerto Rico reports damage and one death. San Salvador expected to be near the hurricane center late today.

Orville E. Hodge former Illinois state auditor pleads guilty to embezzlement forgery and grand larceny charges. At 51 the Republican official admitted guilt before Circuit Judge Clem Smith on 46 indictments tied to a million dollar financial scandal.
Five year old Thomas Edward Pearson was found dead in his yard late Saturday night draped across an electrified fence set by his father to deter dogs from the garage. Charles County medical examiner Dr. Edward J. Edelen said the fence carried a 220 volt charge.
