Area schools prepare for September sessions with most starting the week of September 3. Snyder schools begin September 4 after Labor Day with a half day. Pre‑school starts Tuesday for first graders, two weeks. High school registrations spread across Wednesday to Friday for seniors juniors and freshmen new to town. Elementary registrations run August 20-21 for non preschool attendees.
The city seal coating project is described as a nuisance but cost effective for taxpayers preserving past investments and reducing potholes. Scurry County recorded five of 12 Abilene district traffic fatalities in July as DPS Captain Morahan urged safer driving. Aug 11 Chicago Truman endorses Averell Harriman for president amid Democratic convention intrigue. He says Harriman is the best qualified to lead immediately, rebukes Adlai Stevenson’s bid, mocks polls, and signals a possible contested race as Stevenson's camp weighs its position.
Hurricane Betsy lashed the Leeward Islands with 100 mph winds and moved toward the north. Warnings extended from Antigua to Puerto Rico as forecast path showed a west-northwest drift and potential four to five foot tides along Puerto Rico shores. Officials urged precautions against dangerous winds heavy rains and floods.
The Egyptian destroyer Ibrahim sailed from Malta after British divers repaired a propeller defect. The commanding officer did not meet Admiral Sir Guy Grantham or send the customary message of thanks as the warship slipped past the breakwater.
