President Eisenhower released a midyear economic health report arguing the economy has performed better since his administration began. He cited small declines in activity, rising wages, and unemployment easing in recent months as signs of improvement.

Absentee voters cast 73 ballots the first hour after Harris County Clerk W. D. Miller opened his office. The four day total reached 1,653, about ten times the first primary period, when 2,930 ballots were cast.
New York observed a record low for August 12 as the city’s weather bureau clocked 56.3 degrees at 5 05 am narrowly below the previous 56.4 degree mark set in 1889.
Officials said operations were normal at the Oak Ridge Tennessee and Paducah Kentucky atomic plants amid a threatened strike by CIO production workers over pay. A federal Taft Hartley injunction halted the 4 500 workers strike and imposes an 80 day cooling off period while negotiations continue.
The Associated Press reports a weak cold front neared the Texas Panhandle and could trigger scattered thundershowers while Texas remains hot and dry overall. Temperatures ranged 67 to 81 with more 100s expected. Fort Worth and Texarkana hit 104, and the front may not reach far into Texas.
Governor Allan Shivers accuses Ralph Yarborough of drawing support from backers who opposed Texas law banning the Communist Party. The two Democrats campaigned ahead of the Aug. 28 runoff, with Shivers labeling union groups as Communist-influenced and Yarborough arguing against dam-blocking by Shivers. Campaign stops spanned Port Arthur Odessa Brownwood Lamesa and Dallas TV, radio events.
Snyder area schools outline pre registration for high school and elementary pupils. High school starts with new students lining up in the cafeteria on Monday and returning students on Tuesday and Wednesday by class. Elementary pre school registration wraps up with late slots Monday and orientation Monday. classes begin Tuesday. Junior high registration is set for Sept. 2 with elementary starts Aug. 30 and opening Sept. 2 with short classes.
Texan Gene Thompson 30, from Lubbock, claimed he flew a light plane between Tower Bridge and London Bridge as a grand gesture to win Helen Brown, a Texas Tech student met on a European tour. He said she hadn’t confirmed marriage and called the stunt his last fling before seeking work in the United States.
Camp County Texas and Pittsburg officials request help from the State Health Department as polio cases rise to eight in eight days. Gamma globulin shots, iron lungs, and expert assistance from Austin are rushed to Pittsburg and Tyler where six patients are treated. State figures show 152 new cases in the past week, with 1 575 for the year, and a discussion on polio incidence across counties plus armed forces reporting three cases.
Snyder recorded an even 100 degree high yesterday making it one of the state’s hottest cities. Overnight low reached 71 degrees and the 7 30 a m reading was 77 according to weather observer Mrs D P Stray horn.
Senator Mundt predicted a report on the McCarthy Army row may be ready by August 20. The Army disputed McCarthy's claim that an officer shared a secret FBI document, saying no officer gave him such excerpts during the 36 day hearings. McCarthy called for resumed hearings while Senate investigators consider new fair play rules. The probe centers on alleged Communist infiltration of defense plants and the 15 page FBI document at issue.
The Senate defeated a Magnuson proposal to create a 12 member commission to study Communist influence in labor unions by a 57 31 vote. The measure aimed to substitute for a Butler bill denying collective bargaining to unions deemed Communist infiltrated by the Subversive Activities Control Board.
The Texas governor race heats absentee voting for the second primary. By noon 40 had applied for ballots and 20 had voted. 11 of 27 had voted by noon yesterday. Deadline to honor applications is midnight August 24, three days before the election.
Snyder Junior Chamber of Commerce selected Bill R. Wise to run for state vice president. Wise, 31, faces Bruce Fields and Lingo Brown at the bi regional Fort Stockton meeting. Snyder expects full support from Stamford and Colorado City Jaycees and plans about 20 members to attend the event.
A surprise Senate deal curbs debate on atomic energy legislation to three hours, aiming at quicker adjournment. The plan, supported by Lyndon Johnson, moves the bill toward final passage or back to conference, while concerns over patent provisions and debate length remain unresolved. Opponents and supporters rally around terms of private patent sharing and preferred licenses for cooperating utilities.
