The Labor Department says July employment rose by 252000 to 67,594,000 while unemployment fell to 3744000. Despite poor farm weather and a steel strike starting mid month, teen job seekers found work and overall employment improved.
Snyder buys two heavy duty surplus trucks from Reese Air Force Base. One truck has an auxiliary pump engine for fire fighting after modifications. The other replaces a lighter truck to haul heavy equipment for the street department. Each truck cost 255 dollars.
Snyder school board holds a formal hearing on the proposed 1959 60 budget totaling 2 672 182 up 121 887 from the current year with debt service 690 310 and a tax rate of 1 6642 per 100 valuation 1 16 for maintenance and 50 2 for interest and sinking fund. The district valuation stands at 137 million as auditing for 1958 59 is considered. The plan adds Stanfield Elementary and expands the Lamar Junior High while the administration building and Travis Junior High are enlarged.

The Little Rock School Board said it expected peaceful operation and cited a court approved pupil placement law to admit or exclude students.

New state law cuts police and firework hours in cities over 10 000 population. Snyder City Manager Roy Dunlap says the city will lose about 14000 dollars annually and cut a patrol car to avoid a tax hike. Larger cities face 10 to 12 cent increases. Firemen’s hours change by population tier. Snyder’s firemen remain at 72 hours. The law also allows state advertising funding and vote based party affiliation on poll tax purchases next year.
