Former Texas governor Preston Smith, 65, filed as his own campaign treasurer in a 1978 bid and hinted at another run after serving 1968 to 1972 and losing in 1974. Dahlia Reyna, 17, in Edinburg, died from acute Amebic Meningoencephalitis after being taken off life support.
Altus police, off with a blue flu protest over pay, resume duties today after a Friday sickout. The city council plans to vote next Monday on formal readmission of the officers involved in the wage dispute.
President Carter wife Rosalynn and daughter Amy 9 will arrive in Washington late today ending a five day Plains Ga vacation. The trip comes as the nation celebrates a softball victory that boosted the president’s spirits.

Smith warned the tax would hit middle and lower income households relying on a single five or six passenger car, as House actions push escalating levies beginning at 339 dollars for 1979 model cars under 15 mpg.
Scores of young cowboys and cowgirls competed at the national finals of the American Junior Rodeo Association. Randy Davis of Lubbock led bareback bronc riding with 65 points, followed by Kris Brown of German 60, and others scoring in the 50s to 40s. Steer events had brisk times from Alfalfa Fedderson and Ray Bates, with several riders unscored. Bull riding ended with few atop the animal, and the event featured local stockman Burrell Markham and announcer Jim Miller.
Snyder Independent School District trustees denied all in district transfer requests for the coming year after administration warned that granting them all would create imbalances and require an extra teacher. Individual letters may still be submitted and reviewed case by case.

Winners are announced in the Snyder Daily News on Wednesday. The contest ends Saturday at merchant closing time.
