Fort Worth AP reports prosecutors and defense say jury may be completed Thursday. Judge Gordon Gray noted trial could start Monday if defense lawyer Racehorse Haynes approves two extra jurors. By Wednesday, 30 prospective jurors had been chosen for possible service.
Attorney General Mark White said Texas consumers should not pay higher coal transport costs, intervening in a Marshall federal court case where SWEPCO alleges Burlington Northern, Kansas City Southern, and Louisiana and Arkansas railways fixed coal rates at 12.12 dollars per ton for shipments from Wyoming to Texas starting July 31.
Firefighters in six Western states gain relief from heat as humidity returns, but a fresh Idaho fire already burned two homes and forced 50 families to flee. About 6,000 federal firefighters pushed to gain ground on more than a dozen major fires across the region.

The Lake Travis Improvement Association sues to stop Stacy Dam on the Colorado River near Ballinger Texas. Austin and the Lower Colorado River Authority file similar suits challenging a May 24 Water Commission order. The association cites Dorsey Hardeman's participation in deliberations as unlawful. Hardeman formerly San Angelo state senator. The dam and reservoir would benefit San Angelo and other West Texas cities.
AUSTIN AP The School Land Board voted to lift the minimum royalty on state land leases for oil and gas from 20 percent to 25 percent. The higher rate takes effect at the next lease sale in October. Board chairman Bob Armstrong noted many wells already pay 25 percent or more, and pointed out the last rise was in 1974. He cited oil prices up about 400 percent and natural gas up over 100 percent since then. The increase covers 13 million acres funding the Permanent School Fund, which supports Texas elementary and secondary education. another fund, the Permanent University Fund, is funded by leasing on 2.2 million acres in West Texas.
West Texas forecast shows partly cloudy skies tonight and Friday with widely scattered showers and thunderstorms in the southwest this afternoon through Friday. Highs reach the 90s in most areas, cooler upper 80s in the mountains and near 102 in the Big Bend valleys. Lows range from upper 50s in the mountains to mid 70s in the south, with morning reading near 70 degrees. Precipitation is reported as none so far in 1979.
Energy prices drove a 1.1 percent jump in wholesale prices for July, ending a moderation period. Heating oil rose 9 percent from June to July, gas prices up 3.9 percent, lifting nonfood items by 1.4 percent. Food costs were unchanged. The Labor Department cites pervasive price increases and notes energy-led inflation. The Council on Wage and Price Stability criticized food industry markups in Q2 and warned 37 firms about potential noncompliance with the price standard.

Scurry County Historical Commission discussed plans for a September reunion for current and former residents. Registration will be in Meeting Room A at the Coliseum, with a morning coffee, barbecue, and a program “Scurry County Times: From Buffalo to Oil.” Period clothing is requested and photographs are invited for displays and future invitations. Inquiries go to committee chairpersons and the commission. The AP reported severe weather including hail, a tornado in Ohio, flash flood warnings, and watches across several states.
Oil workers in Ciudad del Carmen cram steel and lead balls into the IXTOC 1 well to slow the flow in hopes of plugging it. PEMEX says about 50,000 balls may be needed and relief wells are being drilled while 20,000 barrels of oil pour into the sea daily.
