About 700000 Bell System telephone workers are asked to ratify a proposed three year contract boosting wages and benefits by 31 percent. Union and Bell officials say approval is likely and the process should take about a month after a late Saturday agreement averted a nationwide strike.
Archbishop Makarios, Cyprus political and spiritual leader, was buried today after a funeral procession through Nicosia. Thousands watched as his coffin traveled by jeep carriage to Kykko Monastery in the Troodos range, where he was laid in an earth-covered tomb. He had led Cyprus since independence in 1960 and died at 63 from a heart attack last Wednesday.
