President Eisenhower announced plans for another complete medical exam before the November 6 election. He said he will inform the public if fitness for a second term is in doubt and discussed how the GOP may reshape its platform and strengthen its standing.
President Eisenhower expressed hope the Suez situation would be settled peacefully and through the conference table. He cited a 24 nation meeting in London on Aug 16 with the Western Big Three aiming for a peaceful settlement. He also noted plans for a second term health exam and commented on vice presidential running mate questions.
The Texas Supreme Court was asked to bar Dist. Judge R D Wright of Laredo from interfering in a court of inquiry into Webb County absentee voting. A mandamus was sought to vacate Wrights restraining order halting one inquiry and delaying hearings led by Dan Moody Jr. and Atty. Gen. Shepperd. The petition, filed in 98th District Court, accuses Wright of enjoining enforcement of the election code.
In Marcinelle Belgium flames cut escape routes as an elevator cable failed trapping about 270 miners 2 485 feet below. Seven reached the surface and 25 escaped earlier. Rescue efforts were hindered by heat fumes and a blocked gallery. Relatives gathered at the pithead as police cordoned the area.
Washington The Agriculture Department forecast this year’s government controlled cotton crop at 13,552,000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight. This is 1,169,000 bales below last year and above the 10 year average of 13,098,000 bales. If realized the harvest yield would average 394 pounds per acre, down from 417 last year.

Andrews Texas reports Lendell Rogers aged 16 dies in car collision three miles south of town. His brother Gary Rogers 18 and Dennis Holman 24 die at the scene. Charles Davis 19 remains in critical condition at a local hospital.
Benny Pilcher, 18, an Eagle Scout and one of 16 Explorer Scouts chosen for a Europe tour last year, will speak at the first annual Scoutnic in Towle Memorial Park. The event in the Lone Buffalo District includes Cubbers, Scouters, Explorers, parents and others, with a picnic supper to follow and tables available for unit reservations. Pilcher, a Texas Tech student, has a long scouting record including the 1953 National Scout Jamboree and service as his council's representative to Governor Shivers in Austin.
Kansas voters rejected Gov. Fred Hall in a competitive Republican primary with Warren Shaw defeating the incumbent. Democratic contenders Harry Woodring and George Docking were close, while Michigan's Cobo won the governor race over Leonard. Carlson secured the Senate nomination in Kansas.
County clerk Dan Cotton reports absentee ballots for the August 25 Democratic second primary have been received. Voting opened Monday and runs through August 21, with ballots arriving at last this morning.
Chicago faces 609 polio cases and 13 deaths with the outbreak edging toward a full-scale epidemic. Health officials push vaccinations in a city of nearly four million as delegates to the Democratic National Convention face no mass inoculation plan.
Ralph Yarborough told a Snyder crowd he is the only Democrat in the race for governor. He disputed charges linking him to Walter Reuther and the NAACP while touting a water and old age pension plan and criticizing his opponent Price Daniel. A 300 to 350 person gathering near the county courthouse heard him denounce political attacks and cite a DeWitt County veterans land deal.

At Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver 30000 500-pound napalm bombs began destruction. Col William A Johnson of the Army chemical corps said the bombs are obsolete and there is no alternative but to destroy them. Project will take about two years as bombs burn in a large pit, with few destroyed daily due to fierce explosions.
