Kauai endured 75 mile per hour winds and torrential rain from Hurricane Dot. The storm cut power and communications, flooded areas, and damaged plantations. Officials expected a multi million dollar loss with daylight to survey the devastation.
The Chamber of Commerce civic affairs committee urged the county commissioners to move quickly on courthouse and jail improvements. They discussed a new jail atop the courthouse and remodeling while reviewing a report by a subcommittee led by Gene Dulaney. Further study of the jail courthouse issue and civil defense plans were noted along with a TEC office pursuit.
Wade Zack Brown of Pampa Texas confessed to shooting Mrs Lela Helms Peet a 69 year old widow in her Riverside California home Tuesday night. He said the loan of 400 dollars for a car and a 43 dollar theft prompted the killing after she refused to extend the loan. He met Mrs Peet through a shipmate whose neighbor was her son.
Buckingham Palace announces Queen Elizabeth II is pregnant with her third child after a 45 day Canada tour. If a boy, he would be second in line. if a girl, she would follow Princess Anne. The Queen and Prince Philip are happy and in good health.
The Associated Press reports a weak cold front crossed Northwest Texas with showers in the Panhandle and South Plains. Amarillo saw a thundershower while other areas had light rainfall and clearing skies. The Weather Bureau forecasts more hot, sticky weather with possible East Texas thunderstorms next week. El Paso measured 0.97 inch of rainfall in the 24 hours to Thursday. Presidio topped the day at 108 degrees, with several cities reaching around 100.
At a Los Angeles news conference Philip Morris executive George Weissman said the cigarette industry is undergoing a revolution and that flavors such as cinnamon chocolate and even new mown hay may be tested for future products. He noted the public shows interest in flavored options and many companies are exploring them.
The Department of Labor says no change is recommended in bracero cotton picking wages for the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Ed McDonald, regional director, lists Aug. 6 as the effective date for Cameron Hidalgo Willacy and Starr Counties with a rate of $2.30 per hundredweight for irrigated and dry land.
President Eisenhower called for a robust labor reform bill to end racketeering in labor management, criticizing the Senate and House bills as ineffective. He backed a Landrum Griffin substitute while Meany labeled the proposal an anti union blunder, and urged Congress to pass truly effective legislation.
The House Appropriations Committee trimmed military construction requests by 278.2 million from 1.5632 billion, approving 1.2840 billion and citing piecemeal planning. Texas allocations were reduced with several bases denied or scaled back, including Webb AFB and Lackland technical facilities.
Weather report notes high 105 degrees Thursday with a 70 degree low and 73 degree reading this morning. East Texas expected partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers through Saturday. North Central Texas similar, Northwest Texas cooler Friday afternoon. Southwest and Gulf Coast regions show possible showers and scattered thunderstorms with no major temperature changes.
Vester Lyn Morris, a 31 year old nurseryman, was acquitted by an all male jury in Houston on charges of shooting Bill O Parker, 38, last March 19 as Parker sat with Morris wife in a parked car. Jury deliberated about five hours.
A major search is under way in Mineral Wells Texas for a six foot tall man wearing a green sport shirt and khaki pants who robbed the First National Bank branch at Camp Wolters of about 30000 dollars. He forced two bank employees into the vault then escaped by car as helicopters and officers sweep the area.
The Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Weslaco will dedicate its new office and laboratory building on October 5. The facilities will house research and extension personnel.
A dynamite truck exploded beside a burning building in Roseburg causing widespread destruction. At least eight were killed with 52 hospitalized and three in critical condition. The blast crater measured 50 by 20 feet and damaged six blocks of downtown.
The Explorer VI paddlewheel satellite, 142 pounds, lifted by a Thor Able rocket from Cape Canaveral at 9 23 a m. The three stage flight aimed for a highly elliptical orbit up to 23 000 miles, with 12 hour cycles. It carries 15 experiments to study Van Allen belts radiation solar energy and space communications. If orbit is achieved this marks a new era in large space research vehicles and future deep space probes.
