A House Senate conference committee seeks a compromise between bills to raise benefits for disabled veterans. The Senate backed a measure totaling an 11.1 percent increase in October, while the House approved an 8.3 percent rise earlier. Over 2 million disabled veterans and more than 300,000 survivors would be affected.
Central Idaho forest fire believed contained three days earlier roared out of control again in the Idaho Primitive Area. A new blaze flared in eastern Wyoming on an Indian reservation. Montana fighters hoped to control a 2,300 acre blaze that consumed 1.6 million dollars in timber in the northwest. In Southern California, a 500 acre brush fire was being cleaned up. Charlene Osborne said the California fire was likely arson. In Iran, early returns show Islamic fundamentalists loyal to Ayatollah Khomeini dominating the assembly writing the post revolution constitution. Interior Minister Hashem Sabeghian reported 383 of 417 candidates were clergy, with six seats in Qom and Semnan going to mullahs. turnout was light.
The SDN Column notes a new federal census will likely add seats to the South and Southwest while reducing representation in the Northeast. Texas should gain at least two seats, with 26 Congressmen expected instead of 24. Texas districts show varied growth, including the 17th. Snyder Public Schools face staffing shortages as a busy summer ends with 35 resignations this year vs 17 the previous year. Industrial arts posts at Snyder High remain unfilled though five graduates interviewed and four chased higher pay elsewhere. Tarleton State reports graduates as part of the pool.
Sammie Robertson announces summer band practice at Snyder High School starting Monday. Schedule runs 7:30 to 10 am with specific sections at 7:30 flags 8 am flutes and drums 9 am saxophones and French horns 10 am advance clarinets and cornets 11 am ninth grade clarinets and low bass.
Silvia Dona dei, an 18 year old Swiss Italian descent student from Berne, Switzerland, arrived in Snyder for a year under the American Field Service. A reception at city hall Saturday with about 50 attendees welcomed her. She will live with the Hendon family at 4506 Houston and will be a Snyder High School sophomore.

The school must function despite funding delays. If tax funds are unavailable on schedule, Snyder Public Schools would borrow money to cover expenses until taxes can be collected. Taxpayers in the district would cover the school's legal costs and the interest on borrowed funds, added to the district budget.

He holds a BA from Abilene Christian University 1971 and MA from Texas Tech 1974, with studies at several universities. He has taught at Perryton High School and Tech, chaired theatre groups, and held multiple office roles in Texas theatre associations.
Young competitors arrive for the American Junior Rodeo Association National Finals in Scurry County Coliseum. The five night event features Texas Invitational Bull Fight and crownings for Fun Miss AJRA and National Finals Queen.
