City Tax Equalization Notices Mailed to 2000 Residents
About 2000 notices of increases and 1500 notices of decreases are going to taxpayers as Snyder conducts a tax equalization program. Public hearings are set for August 8 9 and 10 for residents to speak with the tax equalization board. The mayor notes most increases are small while new construction and annexations push overall city valuations toward 13 million dollars from last year’s 11.6 million.

Hermleigh Schools Set to Open September First
Hermleigh schools will open on September 1 with buses running and a half day 9 am to noon for the first day. Registration and book checkout occur that day, with regular classes starting September 2 at 8 35 am. Enrollment is about 400 as last year. Prisoner Shot In 58 Man Jail Riot
In San Antonio Texas a riot at Bexar County Jail left one prisoner dead and four injured after officers fired about 40 shots. Sheriff Owen Kilday said he shot Escobedo in self defense as the prisoner brandished a large tray. Escobedo died at a hospital about 30 minutes after the clash.

Charles R. Cockrell Funeral Held Today
Funeral services for Charles Ray Cockrell also known as Chuck were held at 2 p.m. today at the First Methodist Church with Rev. J Lennor Hester officiating. The 15 year old son of Dr. and Mrs C R Cockrell of 2311 Thirtieth Street was killed Monday night in a car accident two miles west of the airport. He is survived by his parents three sisters Joan Bebe and Susan all of Snyder. Pallbearers included Bob Harlin Fritz R Smith III Tommy McClatchy Bud Morgan Milton Ham Jimmy Cloud Israel Hijones and Buster Smith. Bolger Funeral Home directed the services in Hillside Memorial Gardens.
