A warm wet system produced eighteen tornadoes across Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, and Florida on Tuesday five. The Monticello Mississippi area saw the deadliest event with four family members killed when their frame house was destroyed.
Washington reports Bergland considers seeking extension of the 1975 grain pact with the Soviet Union though renewal would be in the future. The agreement commits Russia to buy at least six million metric tons of wheat and corn annually for five years starting Oct. 1, 1976. In Texas, drought drives thousands of cattle and sheep to starvation per Commissioner Reagan Brown.

Washington AP reports the first quarterly decline in three years as Commerce data show GNP down 0.6 percent for Q1 1978. Texas candidate Charles Stenholm, a Stamford farmer, said he would win a runoff after finishing second behind Dusty Rhodes. Stenholm spoke at a Snyder breakfast rally of about 50 attendees supporting his bid to replace Omar Burleson.
Panama City crowds celebrate the Senate approval of a canal control treaty, with thousands drinking free beer in Cinco de Mayo Plaza. Brig. Gen. Omar Torrijos announces a national holiday and the return of exiles, while leftist students protest briefly. On the Atlantic side, President de Lukas leads a joyful parade in Colón as Torrijos says he would have sabotaged the canal if the treaty failed.
Bids on a 4 million hospital bond issue will be opened at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Scurry County courthouse. Voters approved the issue on November 8 to finance a major addition to Cogdell Memorial Hospital. Moody's rated the bonds AA.
