Three men missing since a Gulf of Mexico helicopter crash off Texas were recovered early today. The bodies were found inside the overturned craft. names were not released. The pilot, co pilot and one other escaped and were rescued after the vessel incident near a drilling rig.
Associated Press reports intense winds swept through Pansy, ten miles northeast of Crosbyton in Crosby County, causing downed power lines, uprooted trees, and damaged barns and a church roof. No injuries were reported as debris scattered across the town.
A Tyler jury acquitted businessman Don Trull of aggravated kidnapping after more than 18 hours of deliberation. Judge Glenn Phillips urged the jurors to reach a verdict in the Aug. 9, 1977 incident. Trull expressed relief and the foreman declined to comment, citing fatigue.
The SDN Column notes bluebonnets may bloom strongly again this weekend in Marble Falls to Lanne area after a cooler spring and limited moisture. Oscar coverage is described as refreshing, with Vanessa Redgrave receiving both boos and a stage reprimand while many winners appeared content with the honors. A quip about telepathy mail-order courses and a nod to WACIL McNAIR closes the column.
AP reports the neutron bomb, seen as an equalizer to halt Soviet tank assaults in central Europe, may not be produced. Officials say no final decision yet as Carter plans further talks with congressional leaders and briefings with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A NSC spokesman expects a decision within days.
The House Democratic Caucus voted 150 to 57 to endorse a cut in Social Security taxes funded by income taxes and other general revenues. The non-binding resolution does not fix the amount or compare to last year’s $227 billion over ten years tax increases.
Roby and Hermleigh actors won District 8 B UIL one act contest at Snyder High School. Ira earned alternate. Roby and Hermleigh advance to Lubbock on April 15 for area meet. Casts included Roby David Gaona and Donna Hataway. Hermleigh Curtis Tate and Kelly Culp. Directors were Connie Early and Phyllis Smith. See Plays Page 6.
The dollar rose against most West European currencies except the West German mark and gained over a yen in Tokyo, closing at 219.40 yen. Oil buyers covering imports boosted the dollar as European rates opened showing Frankfurt 2.0156 marks, Zurich 1.8790 francs, Paris 4.5750 francs, Amsterdam 2.1605 guilders, and Milan 851.05 lire.
Snyder building figures for 1978 exceed 142 million in the first quarter. March permits total 566 245 with most funds for residential construction. Seven new single family dwellings and a major commercial project permit issued to Mickey Almond Monte West and Wadleigh Construction for a new east side site opposite 42nd Street. Five mobile homes Permits and 1 699 457 first quarter total, down from 2 424 323 last year. Major residential activity includes 27 single family homes 24 mobile homes and a 40 unit apartment complex. Fiscal year totals and past year totals noted.
West Texas partly cloudy today with widely scattered thunderstorms mainly east. A few may be severe in the eastern Panhandle this afternoon and early tonight. Cooler tonight. Fair Thursday with highs in the upper 70s to upper 80s and lows in the 40s to 50s. Big Bend may reach mid 90s. Snyder temperatures show a high of 90, low 47, 7 am 67, no precipitation today. Total 1978 precipitation 1.85 inches.
Tomorrow is the last day for unregistered voters to qualify to cast ballots in the May 6 primary. Qualified voters may register at the county clerk in the courthouse. Those with the yellow registration card already are qualified to vote in all elections.
U S Rep Bob Krueger campaigned in Snyder West Texas with about 30 supporters at The Shack restaurant. He held a brief press conference rejecting Joe Christie’s oil industry puppet claim and said Sen John Tower misrepresents ties to Korean businessman Tongsun Park. Krueger called Christie’s tactics a smear and northern senator style appeal to prejudice.
