The U S dollar closed at 218.175 yen in Tokyo, its lowest level yet, after a Friday report of a $4.52 billion February U S trade deficit. Earlier, it opened at 220 yen and dropped to 218.15 yen before settling.
The Supreme Court denied Charles Mansons request to overturn his life sentence for the 1969 killings of Gary Hinman and Donald Shea, saying the 1970 conviction stands. Police linked the deaths to the Tate-LaBianca era, Hinman found July 1969 in Malibu, Shea body never located. Insurance hearing set for July 19 in Texas on auto rates, board had paused 1977 hearing in mid August.
President Carter wrapped up a landmark Africa tour in Monrovia with a warning that South Africa's Namibia stance could trigger further differences with the United States. He urged an Africa free of outside military influence, noted Cuba's and the Soviet Union's roles in Angola and the Horn of Africa, and praised Obasanjo's shared concerns while conceding policy differences on South Africa. A gunman in downtown Philadelphia claimed to seek attorneys and held five or six people in a second floor Legal Service Center. Police said the incident began around 10 15 am and the gunman demanded to see Steven R Arkans of the firm Levin Arkans was reportedly brought to the scene as heavily armed officers surrounded the area.
