Three arrests for evading draft in Fairmount area

United States Deputy Marshal Cameron led three arrests near Fairmount for evading the draft and threats to the president. Farmers William Haley E Campbell and J M Kauffman faced arraignment and bond set at 500 while Robert Henning faced 2500, all bound over to the federal grand jury.

South Dakota Workmens Compensation Law Set For July 1

The new South Dakota Workmens Compensation Law, effective July 1, aims to replace the old liability system for work injuries. It covers virtually all employers and employees with exemptions for farms, casual labor, domestic servants, and certain railroad workers, and sets benefits at up to fifty percent of wages or $12 per week with a waiting period.

Lester Price Dies After Illness In Sisseton

Lester Price, 26, long-time Sisseton resident born in Langford North Dakota, died Wednesday after a tuberculosis illness. He married Maggie Simmons on June 19 five years ago and is survived by his wife, three children, a brother Earl of Britton, and his parents in Texas. Funeral held Thursday at two, burial in Sisseton Cemetery. he was a member of Modern Woodmen of America.

Lightning kills farmer in Goodwill township

Killed by a lightning bolt Wednesday noon arl Bennett a well known farmer of Goodwill township was struck as he walked behind a team in his field after unhooking during a shower. He died instantly the bolt hitting the back of his head. Survived by a wife and three children and a brother Claude the family receives sincere sympathy from neighbors.

Lockhart Granted New Trial on Mail Matter Case

Andrew F. Lockhart publisher of Chain Lightning to be released on bail and receive a new trial before the U S court of appeals. Writ of error secured by attorney Seth Teasdale of Aberdeen from the Washington court of appeals on Tuesday.

Draft by Number Sets Route for New Army

Washington regulates the draft by numbered system with federal oversight to prevent local favoritism. Drafts will be announced by telegraph to hometowns, exemptions decided by local boards, and the first 628 000 men will form the initial call as the national force grows. South Dakota subscribed 4.813 million dollars, over 300 thousand more than her twin, to the 2 billion dollar liberty loan bond issue. J. G. Bassett, director of the federal reserve bank and state committee chairman, announced recently.

Relief Drive For Belgium Sees $26000 Raised In State

The Belgium relief quota reached 26000 of 36000 with $10100 more expected soon. State chair George Douthit notes 69 counties. 20 have reported. Minnehaha leads with 4123.42. Roberts county follows at 1960.67 in contributions.

Celebrations Planned Across Towns for Independence Day

Great preparations are being made for celebrations this 4th at numerous places. Equity people plan a big time at the Mission in Goodwill township. Illinois settlers of Roberts county have completed arrangements for a picnic at the W. B. Warland and Spence Marvick groves in Enterprise. Indians will hold the annual celebration at the Agency Fair Grounds. Hiantford also plans its usual celebration.

Eggen Cornelius Wedding at Clarkfield Church

Miss Carolina S Cornelius and Garaton Eggen were married Sunday afternoon June 17 1917 at the Lutheran church Clarkfield Minnesota with a large reception at the bride’s home. Ushers bridesmaids and local relatives attended. The couple planned a Duluth and Michigan boat trip after a ceremony noted for formal banking ties and community esteem.
