A nostalgic voice contrasts old fashioned Christmas at home with modern city celebrations. The speaker laments crowded streets, costly gifts, and formal gatherings, preferring simple gatherings with old friends and a warm hearth. He recalls a jackknife treat and wishes for a real yard dinner set with neighbors rather than elite turtle soup and urban bustle.
An announcement describes a strict fair contest to pick Roberts Grant Marshall County’s leading young lady. A Waldorf upright piano worth 100 is the prize, with votes via coupons from subscriptions and work, voting tallied by a three member Awarding Committee. Contest runs about four months with weekly results and a closing time set for 4 oclock.
The narrator recalls a rough heartfelt Christmas scene as a winter chill and soot flakes fall. An inner longing for a traditional Christmas past surfaces, imagining reconciliation and shared warmth between enemies. The piece evokes pride, nostalgia, and a yearning for communal joy beneath the city’s cold facade.
Judges will count votes after the final tally, seal the ballot box, and transport it to the bank where the award committee will guard it during business hours and in the vault at night. All voting in the last week occurs within the sealed box, and cash ballot slips with subscriber names go in a sealed envelope labeled with the contestant name. This ensures a fair, square deal for all participants.
