London dispatch reports unrest in Johannesburg with barricaded streets and rowdy scenes during a voting debate. Rhodes accuses MPs of treason and bribery while Britain edges toward possible war. Troops prepare to sail to Natal as fear of border conflict grows.
Two Allegheny Railroad trains collided near Parker Pennsylvania injuring several people. Engineers Charles Hayne and M H Sloan were among the wounded along with J W Burtess Loyd Martin Alice Pryor and others. Company officials say the freight engine failed to keep clear and the passenger train was struck.
The Silver State wire reports Havana editorials fault the Cuban National League for not fully uniting after merging with the National party. The Bliver State wire notes Washington and Manila dispatches show strain in party cohesion while War Department cables hint at uncertain evidence amid a Manila voyage by senators and volunteers.
A committee of striking cartmen publicizes a note from Bend Bagtario the Spanish Consul General inviting a meeting. They state they asked for no intervention and that the interview had no consequences for the committee, defending their rights and law and order in the country.
The Dewey celebration reception plan moves to inform Admiral Dewey of the full program. A committee aboard the Olympia will brief him on Thursday afternoon, under the reception committee's responsibility. Members include Whitney McK nway Foster Croker Morton McAdoo Depew. The First Montana Volunteers arrived from Manila aboard the Zealander and were escorted by the Thirteenth Minnesota to the Presidio in San Francisco. They will muster out in about three weeks after a city reception with flags wreaths and bouquets placed in the rifle barrels as they marched to camp.
Manila dispatch reports no word on the Subig Bay naval expedition. Filipinos have not surrendered American prisoners or sent a river to meet Major General Ousewrod. No further word from rebel officers who met General MacArthur. Chief Signal Officer Thompson begins a two week inspection tour of southern cable service.
Vienna dispatch reports the Austrian cabinet, led by the premier and interior minister Count Thun-Hohenstein, met the emperor after a cabinet meeting at ten. Ministers tendered their resignation due to ongoing parliamentary deadlock and inability to terminate it.
Theodore Schaeffer of Pittsburg, president of the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers, tells the Industrial Commission that about 70 percent of iron, steel and tin workers are organized and that trusts have benefited workers. He notes wage trends, opposition to compulsory arbitration, support for limited immigration, and belief that large combinations could be regulated to reduce strikes.
Paris dispatch reports General De Gallifet’s wartime proclamation closing the Dreyfus affair has sparked strong opposition from Dreyfusards and Radicals. Gov today published a lengthy statement announcing he will not run for Detroit mayor this fall. He said only municipal ownership of street railways and three cent fares might have attracted him, but Rt. Wilson refused to negotiate and withdrew his sale offer ending efforts toward the proposed plan.
Coburg report says William H Ponton teller at Dominion Bank of Napanee was acquitted on charges of complicity in the August 20 1897 bank robbery in which 13000 was stolen. Edward Pare and others implicated Ponton, Pare and Holden pleaded guilty and received three and four year sentences, Roach had a suspended sentence.
In Chicago on September 2, railroad circles foresee a general Western rate war. James Charlton, Alton general passenger agent, notified Western Passenger Association that his line will meet all competitor cuts on its counters. The plan dates September 25 for a $10 open rate to Kansas City, limited to continuous passage on the sale date, a $2.50 cut from the regular trade rate, serving as the basis for the reduced rate to Omaha.
Boston Sept 24 Today's session of the International Congregational council opened at Tremont Temple with devotional exercises. The plan was to adjourn at noon for an excursion to Salem. Albert Spicer M P London spoke on The Church in Social Reforms, followed by Prof Taylor of the Chicago Theological Seminary. Taylor was interrupted to postpone the conclusion until after the Salem trip. Dr Moxom of Springfield protested adjournment. a motion failed and about a third of the audience departed. Most delegates later left for Salem.
Senator Wellington forwards reply to Governor Lowndes after demanding resignation as chair of the Republican State Central Committee. He cites unlawful call for a Monday meeting and warns of a November rebuke at the polls. Governor Lowndes says incident closed and warns he would decline the governorship if the committee keeps Wellington.
Governor Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Cleveland en route to Akron for a campaign speech. He was met by Tippecanoe Club members, escorted to Hollenden Hotel, and proceeded to Akron by special car with Senator Hanna and a large party.
A telegram from Key West reports twenty eight new cases and five deaths. New Orleans notes two deaths with five others under treatment and no new cases. Havana dispatchs indicate new cases with two convalescents. overall, the outbreak appears controlled with cooler weather aiding containment.
Pittsburgh September 28 The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers conference began here with secrecy and unusual conduct. The session reportedly discussed reforms and a resolution related to the Cleveland streetcar strike, while smoke from Hood's Sarsaparilla advertised in morning chatter.

In Cleveland on Sept 23 H G Carleton deeded Cleveland Canton and Southern Road property to Myron T Herrick and other capitalists for 1 960 009 with a second mortgage stake by Lake Exeter group. Akron opened Republican State campaign Sept 22 with Judge Nash, Gov Roosevelt and Hanna among attendees. 15 000 in parade at Grace Park where 75 000 gathered to hear Nash and Roosevelt speak.
Representative Tawney of Minnesota invited the President to briefly visit La Crosse Wik and Winona on his Western trip if schedules permit. White House said heavy public duties prevent meetings unless for matters of special importance.
The seventy first annual meeting of the Odd Fellows Grand Sovereign Lodge adjourned. A proposal barred any member from aiding an insurance firm that violates lodge rules by using the Odd Fellows name. It was voted that the Odd Fellows Relief Association of Canada may retain its name.
New Orleans reports Frank Leiden, stage manager for Ei H Sothern Thomas Keene and Frohman, killed at the city opera house in Chattanooga last night by Julia Morrison. Leiden born in New Orleans 38 years ago, known in private life as Frank Leidenheimer, from a prominent local family and having pursued theater for fifteen years.
A special train carrying 500 men of the Sixty third regiment from Camp Aldershot left the rails near Mount Uniacke about thirty miles from Halifax today and lay in a ditch. Several injured, no deaths reported, and a wrecking train was dispatched to the scene.
In Middlesboro Kentucky a man connected to the Sowder Turner feud is shot through the ice near his back from an ambush at home. The incident, reported by The Silver State wire, suggests the long running feud may be revived after ten years of quiet.
About 400 boys at Craven Brothers Close Works in Salem struck for wage increases. The strike halted production with roughly 200 blowers and other workers drawing from employment as a consequence.
General Otis reports Insurgents derailed a railway train near Angeles and attacked guards. Captain Perry was lightly wounded, Private Charles Ziemans of the hospital corps was killed, Private Sam Steele of the Seventeenth Infantry severely wounded, civilian Charles Price lightly wounded, and another civilian killed. Six insurgents died in the engagement before troops pursued them.
The Southern Pacific wire in San Francisco confirms the Crocker interests in the railroad were sold but declines to name the purchasers. It is believed the stock has been transferred to Hunting.
The fourth annual convention of the Socialist Labor Alliance met in Pittsburgh with New York selected as the general executive board seat. An amendment passed to empower the executive board to locate new quarters for allied unions. A per capita tax of 2 cents monthly was proposed and sent to the International Congress in Paris 1900. Officers elected include General President William L. Brower and General Secretary Patrick Murphy.
