Fire destroys packing plant in Kansas City
A large fire at Jacob Hold's packing plant on West Ninth Street Kansas City caused estimated losses between 250000 and 300000. The blaze began in the fertilizing department at 1245 AM spreading to the lard and oil sections with explosions from ammonia tanks and oleomargarine tanks. Firemen battled intense heat as water pressure proved weak and feared explosions hindered efforts. The plant, on the river, prevented spread to nearby buildings. By 3 AM the fire was controlled. J G Towney, plant general manager, could not confirm final loss. Separately five new yellow fever cages and one death were reported in Key West as part of ongoing health actions.
