Fatal Explosion at Shenandoah City Colliery

An explosion of mine gas at Shenandoah City Colliery near Yousville entombed twenty two men. Ten rescued alive, others feared dead as the mine caught fire. Shenandoah fire department aided in rescue efforts. By 3 PM all entombed men were out. several seriously injured but no deaths reported. fire extinguished.

Bell's Regiment Wins A Victory In Porac Fight

Manila October 17 Bell's regiment moving from a point north west of Baboor drove the enemy from Porac. One American was killed and one wounded. The Filipinos suffered many killed and wounded. The Americans captured two bullock carts of ammunition.

Humboldt County 1899 Tax Roll Shows Increase Over Last Year

Auditor Hill completes the 1899 tax roll preparing for transfer to Treasurer Gilbert on November 6. Real estate totals 2,932,185 and personal property 1,167,530, yielding 3,599,715 taxable value. State and county tax at 230 per thousand amounts to 82,793.45, with school district bonds and interest adding 1,668.88, 953.61, 1,067.86, and 2,645.83 respectively. Poll taxes 1,371. Grand total 90,500.63, up from last year’s 82,468.91 by 8,031.72. State’s portion 35,997.11.

Killing of Schoeph on White Plains Hill

Joseph Schoeph a track inspector died yesterday forenoon after being struck by railcar No 204 on White Plains hill while riding a velocipede. The engine could not stop in time. he was found with a head wound but no other injuries. An inquest in Wadsworth ruled accidental death. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 11 o clock. Schoeph lived here many years and was regarded as industrious and weakened by lifelong disability.

New York reports the Shamrock broke a topmast and retired early in the America's Cup race against the Columbia. The Columbia led, then finished unofficially at 2 36 50, with Lipton blaming a loose bolt or broken backstay and promising to repair and race again.
