Tablet Marks 1575 Black Assize at Oxford County Hall
A marble tablet at Oxford’s County Hall commemorates the 1575 Black Assize and gaol fever that killed Lord Chief Baron Sir Robert Bell, High Sheriff Sir Robert Doyley, and about three hundred others within forty days. Also included are unrelated brevities about a French greeting, a bone joke, a Buena Vista man, calico yardage, Quebec snow, and Dominion note.
